South East Wales Amal Branch secretary Amarjite Singh is determined to "progress the equalities agenda and turn the tide on union membership levels" during his year as Wales TUC (WTUC) president, to which he was elected last month.

"AJ" - as he's known to friends and colleagues - has served fellow CWU members in various positions for over a decade and is a regular delegate to the union's annual conference.

His work with the TUC began in 2000, when his CWU branch secretary asked him to attend his local Cardiff Trade Union Council - local TUC organisations to which members of all affiliated unions can send delegates - and he has been a CWU representative on the Wales TUC general council since 2010.

AJ is very proud to be the first postal worker elected to this position and he is already working hard on various issues.

"I'm now being asked to speak at union events and gatherings on behalf of WTUC and we also have a strong working relationship with the Welsh Assembly," he said.

"We're currently working on a joint paper on procurement and also one on trade union workplace equality reps with the assembly," AJ explained and added: "In the next couple of months, WTUC will be working hard on organising for the big A Future That Works demonstration that the TUC is organising for October 20th.

"We're aiming at filling coach loads of trade unionists, their families and supporters to take Welsh solidarity down to London and we're also hoping to organise an event here in Cardiff too."

AJ's term of office lasts until this time next year and, when he looks back at his presidency, he says that he wants to have achieved two main goals.

"The two big things I want to be able to achieve over the year are in progressing the equalities agenda and moving forward on organising and recruitment," he pledged.

AJ is the second CWU representative to be elected to serve the TUC regionally this year after CWU Midlands regional secretary, Lee Barron, was re-elected as chairman of the Midlands TUC in March - Midland's TUC re-elects CWU's Lee Barron. http://www.cwu.org/news/archive/midland ... arron.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
