Quick transfer question

Post by The wanderer »

Greetings.

When a building shuts and Royal mail try to find you a new job they have to make you a reasonable offer, just one offer or so I have been told.

The definition of reasonable is often open to interpretation but one of the definitions of reasonable is the amount of mileage the business expects you to travel to get to your new job.

I have heard the figure 25 miles mentioned on more than one occasion but I don't know where in any Royal mail / CWU literature this figure is printed.

So does anyone know where the figure for reasonable travel mileage to a new job is printed, in what document is reasonable mileage stated?

Is there such a thing as reasonable traveling distance to a new job or can RM offer you a job anywhere in the country and force you to go there or take VR?

Thanks.

Moved to MC forum, hopefully they will know something.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

the number i heard getting thrown about, around a year ago, is 50 miles

if your refuse a "reasonable" job offer, they can take you down a process to dismiss you, but that is incredibly unlikely, they would try to pawn you off with either a vr, or bumping with someone else

Thanks Postman and Talell.

Tallel this fifty mile is it a round trip IE going there and back or is it fifty miles each way and do you know where it is written, is it written in any document at all?
If I could find any evidence of this fifty miles being used in previous job relocation's/closures then perhaps I could use this figure as a precedent when dealing with our own closure.

What is this process where they can sack you, is it written anywhere?

Unfortunately and I am not having a go at the Union completely but the rep who will be over seeing our closure is very unreliable.
Whenever we have any big decisions or announcements being made he will book annual leave and be unobtainable, this is a fact and not just me "slagging off the Union".
I am therefore in a position where I have to do things myself.

Now I am trying to build some sort of case for myself but I need documents and evidence.
At the moment I am going through MTSF 2010 with a fine tooth comb and after this I shall be moving onto Business and transformation agreement.

If the management do not abide by agreements during our closure then I always have an employment tribunal as an option just as long as I have agreements that I can use as evidence.

So basically can anyone recommend any reading relevant to a mail centre closure.
What documents would I need to become familiar with in regards closure and relocation of my job?

Thanks.

I've found it in the back of MTSF 2010, Appendix A.

To dismiss you for refusing a reasonable job offer is quite a long winded process that would involve CWU HQ and an appeal is granted that can involve ACAS.

The whole argument relies on the definition of what is a "reasonable offer" which will involve things like travel time and distance and even personal circumstances, there are many factors that can be involved to determine the definition of what is reasonable.

I have briefly read MTSF 2010 and it looks like I shall be reading it again and again until it all finally sinks in and I haven't even started on the business and transformation agreement yet.

no idea if the 50 mile thing being thrown around is written anywhere, mail centre rationalisation framework might be a good read as well, iirc it contains some relocation advice

MTSF is the worst agreement to try and read, let alone understand (there are still large parts open to interpretation, ask any rep conducting a mtsf resign), BT2010 is much easier on the eye and mind, so you should probably start there, but I can't seem to remember anything relocation related in it.

Hi they is no set mileage for distance it is what royal mail feel is reasonable then u argue over it as our MC is closing and want us to travel to sheffield MC which from HULL is approx 140 mile round trip

I would have thought that rather than distance, travelling time would be a better measure.
25 miles down the motorway is 25minutes.
Through London it's a couple of days.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Under peoples 1st, Belly, RM don’t offer you a job, you put in your preferences (1, 2, 3) so you decide where you want to go not RM telling you where to go, so using that they should not be that scenario of been offered a reasonable request because you are not going to choose to go somewhere you don’t want to go (if that makes sense) what is reasonable to one person may be unreasonable to another!
