Oxford Mail Centre to be closed down !

All the late shift staff were called in meeting rooms.. Oxford Mail Centre to closed down on Feb., 2009 and processing operations to be shifted to Swindon ( in there new Super office which is currently being built). Cause of closing down Oxford is that ......Union is far too strong and too many strikes.

More bad news. They did say they were going to look again at closing Oxford and Hemel Mail Centres. Is there any news on the future of Hemel?

That's what they did with the North London Mail Centre N1 when there were too many strikes they closed it down and sold off the land.

Confirmed on Monday that West London Mail Centre will cease all Outward by Jan 08 and Inward by June 08.

We knew it was on the cards but the spineless management wouldn't actually sign it off until they decided to continue with restructuring reagrdless of agreements.

This doesn't surprise me. West London has been under the knife for a long time. The movement to 4 mail centres in London from about 10 in the early 1990s was always the plan and shouldn't necessarily be seen as part of a wider conspiracy. Not sure why it took so long to be honest. A dreadful building for modern day operations. Can't put in the latest machines and mail was going up and down numerous levels. The working conditions were also poor as were those in North London. Mount Pleasant needs to be completely rebuilt if it to compete in the future, or move it out to the M25/M1 junction or possibly M11/M25 junction.

Other mail centeres will also begin to decline in number as RM doesn't need that many. With competition taking significant chunks of upstream mail this trend will ocnitnue in earnest. Mail centres need to be located near road hubs, and possibly some rail hubs. They need to be large sheds that can take the newest sorting machinery, and also be on one level.

It is also true that militancy will be in the backs on mgmt's minds, but if you were in their position you would do eactly the same.

I reckon the number of mail centres will be reduced by at least 40% over the next 10 years, and possibly quicker if things move apace.

Nice one Fozz, I tell ya mate RM have put a nice big NEW MC in East London and its all singing all dancing... MECH in there and talk of flat sorting MECH. It all seems rosey down at E.L.M.C. ?????

Well we came down there in 03 and was told its a SUPER SMASHING GREAT place to work.. We will be able to process more work quicker. And we can earn loads more in bonuses.. MMMMM GREAT!!!! Oh but we will have to change all the duty sets and lose jobs, and cut back on this and that, GREAT?????

Then we found out that RM had the leased site on a short term of 10 years... Its in prime housing development area as its 10 mins from Canary wharf and on the river.

The Road links around Bromley By Bow-locks are murder at best.. Its on the main road that links North/East London to the South thru the Blackwall tunnel. On the A2 Down to the coast...

Everyday there is a traffic jam or accident... Grid-lock...

The reason we moved down to this New SUPER MC. Is because its outside the Inner London weighting.. So RM pay less... Dont mind that at Whitechapel that the mail rail that sent mail across London faster than anything other transport could do was there..... RM shut that down.

But then put more mail on the roads thru the congestion charged parts of london...

Red-ish Ken wants less HGV's on the roads.. RM put more

Everything RM have done in East London has been short term and a waist of Money.. Now you say Fozz the RM will close 40% of MC's in 10 years..? Well put East London in there... As anybody with a look at RM's antics would lead to believe RM wanted this place closed back in 03...

Its there big picture that is no coincidence that we are all under attack from :cfo & :lfo And the clues have been there all along... We aint gonna have a MC in one of the most populated area in Britain... Nice RM..

It will be another Greenford... Move all the posties outside London as its cost effective and No inner London Weighting....

But the people still live in London.....

The state of RM now.. AND IT WILL BE WORSE UNLESS WE FIGHT NOW FOR OUR JOBS.. Yes there will be changes But with us in SOME control Hopefully.

Totally agree that WLMC is no longer fit for purpose and with declining mail volumes it makes commercial sense to close.

But why delay the final announcement for most of the summer, be open and honest for a change so that people can make plans for the future.

Closing Oxford ... hard liner CWU reps. to blame. Too much sugar in tea ... staff run for union reps. Moral was very low no one wanted to work ... live mail and torn letters packets every where. Oxford mail centre FAILED every day and night and they fiddled the books too.

Gloucester fought and won the fight to keep their mail centre, but at Oxford's expense? It's all down to the Thames Valley region (Reading, Oxford, Swindon & Gloucester) being forced into moving all the mail through one or two MC's. Don't Oxford usually walk out at the drop of a hat? Are they going to do it over this?

well look at it this way if we get more solid union members into 1 big building it will make it easier to really f??k things up for rm if needs be,the less mcs we have the less we have to worry about controlling when needs be

No! That's the reason they've brought the subject up at this early stage. RM are hoping for a reaction. The more s**t they can throw at the CWU the more difficult it is for them to control the National strategy. I'd grin and bear it, follow the instructed action days and bide my time - there's a lot of water to go under the bridge by Jan 09. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink. The changes will more than likely take place but there are lots of ways to make a system fall apart. Remember the film "Bridge on the River Kwai" the Japs were ruthless in trying to get the bridge built but the British resisted by following instructions but without the necessary enthusiasm. It may be that this is going to be such a huge cock up they are going to have to come back to the union to get us to make it work - with of course suitable recompense.

Wouldn't be the first time RM have cocked something up-that's it be patient . Even a pro RM site warns of the danger of taking out the infrastructure & shortermism , :lfo think's the world's a big casino ,just have to play this poker game with a bit more guile and planning .
