Sunday 10 June
As part of our £2 billion national transformation programme, Falkirk Delivery Office has introduced changes which are helping to lift the load from our people’s shoulders.
One of the main improvements to operations is the use of lightweight trolleys to carry larger mail items to their destinations.
Terry Allan, lead collection and delivery sector manager, said: 'We need to modernise the way we operate as a business as a whole and as part of this, we have made changes to Falkirk to both maintain service standards and keep our prices as low as possible.
‘Fewer letters are now being posted in the UK and we need to organise our delivery routes to be as efficient as possible.
‘We are also delivering more large items, so we are investing in new equipment to carry these items to customers even more securely.
‘The new equipment reduces the risk of injury to our postmen and women from carrying heavy mail bags.’
Modernisation programme
The CWU welcomed most of the changes the modernisation programme will bring.
Willie Marshall, Falkirk CWU branch secretary, said: 'This transformation has been implemented all over the UK, in Sterling and now in Falkirk.
‘We’ve been look for something like this to take the weight of postal workers’ shoulders for a long time and it’s a tried and tested method.’
Willie said that people will now see more postal vans shared by two posties on their rounds.
The changes will not compromise quality of service.
Alex Morrison, Royal Mail’s collections and deliver manager, said: ‘We are proud of the high regard in which our postmen and women are held in Falkirk.
‘The local delivery team and I are fully committed to providing a high quality of service that is as reliable and friendly as customers have come to expect from Royal Mail over many years.’
Due to the introduction of new delivery routes, the times customers receive mail may be earlier or later than current delivery times.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: Lightweight trolleys lift the load
Couple of issues of my own with this...
Willie Marshall is not Falkirk CWU branch secretary he's Scotland No2 branch secretary.
And...Sterling?...really?
That's a furniture warehouse...near Stirling.

Re: Falkirk:Lightweight trolleys lift the load
Why do they assume everyone is walking around with a bag on their shoulders. Yes a trolley gets weight off the shoulder if you are trolling around with a bag. Why do they not comment on the difference between a trolley and a bicycle?

I wonder how long it will be before the trolleys are ditched and they are back to running about with a bag on their backs?

As part of Royal Mail's plan to transform the business we have a £2 billion investment plan partly funded through a £1.2 billion commercial loan agreed with the Government and which must be repaid, to allow the company to modernise the mails operations—as all our major rivals did in the 1990s.

HCT remove the weight from your shoulder to your lower back and feet and ankles .... they trying to tell us it is more cost efficent to replace bikes with vans ie rental, road tax, insurance and £1.40 a litre for diesel .... i don't think so ... the revisions were costed two or 3 years ago when diesel was around £0.80 a litre .... absolute nuts ... they want our small office to have another 7 vans and replace our bikes with them ..... how much will the cost be to run these vans including rental/tax/insurance/diesel ... i willing to bet it will be more than the cost of 10 - 15 new bicycles
