The obvious reason for signing in and out is in case there is a fire. But yes every other day we have to sign for some new rule etc. makes you wonder where all these signatures are kept though and who has access. My other work was in retail and we only used a clocking machine, no signing.

That's really not the reason it's just a made up excuse to justify the whole waste of time.
If you have a fire you can't rely on signing on sheets to tell you who is or isn't in the building,it isn't a reliable enough system.
It would mean if you forgot to sign in you could be left to burn.

I got a nice bundle of things to sign about D2D, mail integrity... and I also used to work in retail and clocked in and out using a card and a machine, it was like a step back in time signing in on a sheet. Its less effort to just have the clocking machines connected to the computer that way you know if people were late.

you would think prior to being a manager(about 5 years now) they had never seen a computer.
i wouldn't judge except there is a management grade of pay being paid.. but no skill set to justify it

In my estimation no - however I agree with Storm - its the excess after normal working hours that will be easier to track.

It may also help make people take their breaks during the working day rather than at the end, which is common practice. It would need someone to become a test case if they did an 8 hour day, signed out on time but tried to claim 40 minutes excess because they had not taken their break.

It would, however affect those who take their break within their working time but at the end - not sure RM would allow you to clock out 40 minutes early based on you not taking your break. It could be perceived as official recognition of a practice that is against statutory requirements for rest breaks.

One thing is certain if they do bring in clocking machines, then some common practices may disappear for both Management and workers.
