I would save your money,before I came to RM I was a hgv1 driver for 14 years,big double sleeper Daf truck 3 or 4 nights out a week,sounds great but not in reality,impossible deadlines to meet,racing against traffic,falling out with the wife and kids because you are so tired after a weeks driving,trying to find somewhere safe at night to park up,getting pestered by pikeys to sell them some diesel,waking up in the morning nowhere to have a wash,finding out the pikeys have visited you in the night and drilled your fuel tank,cut your curtains and rifled your load,then you've got the police and their spotchecks,motorways being closed because some dickheads suitcase has come off his roofrack and there clothes have caused an accident,finally getting to a big supermarket distribution centre and waiting 5 hours to get unloaded and explaining to your wife that you cannot take her out for that meal you promised because you ran out of hours and are forced to park in a laybye that hundreds of motorists have used as a toilet,then trying to get to sleep in a cab in these temperatures,honestly don't bother its a terrible job.

Fair play to him.I used to really enjoy it but not now its a nightmare.

You could be nails but when you get out of your cab in the middle of the night in a layby to see what that noise was and find a couple of blokes pinching your load/diesel you are going to come unstuck.

honestly don't bother its a terrible job.

But working for royal mail will probably be a lot better, no over night stayouts, regular hours and holiday, It sounds quite cushy by all accounts.

Ok the responsibility is massive with driving a great big death on wheels machine but RM would probably be a good company to drive for, drivers seem to be well looked after in RM.

And even if you don't use it it might still help you if your office shuts and you need to move on.

It'll look good on your CV.

This is actually the Union at it's best it really is and I think they might get swamped a bit by this scheme.

That's probably the reason why my branch has not heard of this scheme.

Thanks The wanderer,yes driving for Royal Mail would be a lot better as would driving for a large supermarket chain although a lot of those are,or going contract which basically drivers get paid less and aren't employed by the supermarket chain,the trouble is these jobs are much sought after,don't be tempted by the chance of driving a big flash waggon tramping,it's not like Eddie Stobarts trucks and trailers,I was paid £14.50 tax free for a night out about 10 years ago,out of that there is parking fees to be paid,£10.00 to park at most motorway services and even there you aren't 100% safe and likely to get your curtains cut,then you have got to get an evening meal and breakfast as well out of that.If any of you do take up this offer try and avoid working for local hauliers unless you like living in a cab and racing about trying to meet impossible deadlines.I wouldn't go back for £600 a week honestly

I couldn't do a HGV job in RM, you work all sorts of hours, the only day off you get is Christmas day, thats why they get their extra money for working bank holiday and funny hours, not for me, I did ask around and decided nope.

Find out who your ULRS are and ask them to try and get something set up, they might not be aware of it and would appreciate the heads up on this training.
