They were installed on a Sunday, Monday morning came and it was a disaster. No porters, no-one allowed to go down the backs of the frames due to H&S, staff clearing in over the top of the sorters, mail flying back out of the slots because of the elastic bands on the back, even less space in the office than before. We ended up with the Area H&S rep down and he wasn't impressed. Now the space between the 2 rows of backless frames is used to store the yorks of M/S. Oh, and both letters and flats are sorted into the same slots, so clearing down is a nightmare. I can see why RM love them.
You may as well move them together and close that space up as very soon mailsort won't arrive at MCs until the day before it's due to be deleivered.

Think of it this way your clearing down the frames more often and each time a slot is cleared you're probably having to stop sorting for a few moments. All that time will add up meaning you'll probably get off the IPS later, so get tied up later and depending on time have a bit less time to deliver it so increases the chances of people having to cut-off.
Update: The frames have now been moved and instead of 2 fames backing onto each other, we now have 1 long continuous frame. Still no-one allowed to clear from the back, so it's just like having the old IPS frames back, but stuck in the middle of the office and at great cost. Well done RM, very well done indeed.

TBH I've no idea what the thought process behind it was or what it was meant to achieve. Anyway we'll find out soon enough I suppose.

I think they are quite good. We used to have the long frames and the ones that 'wrapped' round the blokes sorting. The latter used to be annoying to clear down from since there was 2 people working on them, and they kept colliding too. Now they have their own little space with every walk for the postcode on it, so it all tends to get done quicker (or maybe mail is down :coolr )

No porters for us either. I don't do IPS so I just clear from the back throughout the morning.

What stops the mail flying through the frame and onto the floor when people flick the letters into the slots?

We'd need a bigger office, not enough room to swing a cat in ours, let alone a walkway behind the IPS frames

Loads, usually heavy magazines. Hard hat required.
