postman requirements to have driving duties?

Post by rev master »

Hi, I am currently applying for a "Postman/Woman with Occasional Driving" vacancy and was just wondering if royal mail require you to be a minimum age and/or have a minimum number of years worth of driving experience before giving you driving duties.
Thanks

Looks like the min age to work for us is 17,and can't see anything on the jobs page that you have to have a licence for x amount of years.

Good luck.

though it may be a requirement to have a driving licence to get the job but you will probably find it wont be a driving job as most of them are usually taken by the senior posties in the office, most if not all job offers in royal mail now usually include a requirement to hold a driving licence that way they can force you to drive if they need it in the future

Thanks for your views. I am just a bit unsure of the idea of being asked to drive a van for the first time. If I get the job I guess I will just have to adapt when they eventually ask.
thanks again

We've had members go straight from passing their test to driving for RM even at 18.
You will have to be assessed first by someone from the AA so if you're not an experienced driver it might be handy if you could get a little practice in with a van first.
Most of the time you're driving with us it will be in a small car derived van so to be honest other than a lack of rear view mirror there isn't much difference but they used to have the habit of throwing you into the biggest van in the office for your assessment and that might be a transit, vivaro or an old LDV assuming they still have one that runs.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

I've applied for a similar role and not once has the amount of time I've been driving or my age cropped up, I'm 25 and only been driving about a year and half by the way. They seem more concerned by the amount of points you have on your licence - I think you have to have under 6

Where did you get that from? I'm hoping to get a Xmas job with you, and last year anyway on the list of payscales it started at 16, not 17.

I just done a random job search on their jobs page and the salary starts at 17,maybe casual work is different for some reason.
