Is it impossible to reclaim tax?

Post by Rafiki »

Hi, I was just wondering if anybody else had any problems with reclaiming tax? I paid £150 in income tax contributions during my three weeks at the Royal Mail throughout the Christmas period, and 5 months on and I still haven't received anything. When I phoned the HMRC a few months ago I was told that because I have been claiming JSA for more than a month I must go to the Job Centre with my P45 given to me by Angard, so I did that once the Angard P45 eventually arrived, and they dismissed it and said I must phone HMRC.

It has been like this ever since the start of March. What do I do? I was a college student before I got the temporary Royal Mail job, I feel like I'm being thrown from pillow to pillow and I'm really unsure how to reclaim tax back. I have in no way earnt £7,000 or whatever the figure is, and I just don't know which way to turn. Do I just keep doing what I have done for many months and hopefully someone takes iniative and gives me the tax back or is there a different route I can take? I'm just not getting anywhere. The help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm pretty sure at the end of the Tax year you receive a P60 based on how much you earnt for that employment in the year and if you photocopy them or notify HMRC they can add the jobseekers allowance + Angard money + any other job and if its less than £7000 you shall receive all your tax back in a rebate. I left mine last year from another employment and received £100ish in January as they must by law pay out rebates by then or have to pay interest on it. It's usually busy the first few weeks but you have to receive this by the middle of May I think so after then you can go claiming rebates. I paid 20% tax on angard since december as I didnt bother sorting it out at first as I thought it was just an xmas thing but I've ended up working every day since xmas except for the odd day here and there so need to get about 600-700 soonish but I'm in no rush as my employment could end at any time and the tax rebate would be a nice way to see me through as I really don't want to go back to the hassle of being on job seekers allowance.

If the tax year has ended you will need to get the rebate from HMRC for the tax year you worked. I think the tax year ends on 5th April so if you got your P45 and showed the JSA people after 5th April there is nothing they can do with it. If you are in the new tax year you will have a new tax coding and start afresh tax wise. The previous years tax will still need to be reclaimed from HMRC.

I got my tax back last year by contacting HMRC (after the end of the tax year), they were pretty helpful but the DWP needed to provide some paper work and this held it up a bit.
