THE future of a major sorting office in Gloucester hangs in the balance as Royal Mail consults over proposals to move it.
Gloucester Mail Centre workers have been told there are a number of options being considered by management, which could mean job losses at the Eastern Avenue site.
Royal Mail U-turned over a move to Swindon in 2007, but earlier this year workers feared for jobs when a review of the centre, where all GL postcode mail arrives first, was announced.
Upgrade
An update to staff issued on May 11 offers ten possible options.
They include moving operations to Swindon or Bristol (and bringing Gloucester north and south delivery offices to Eastern Avenue), making it the centre for the Thames Valley area, keeping it and bringing north and south delivery offices under one roof, and upgrading current sorting technology.
Royal Mail has experienced a £120million fall in its core business and expects a further drop.
"Over the next four weeks we will continue to meet with the union to discuss and share thoughts on these initial views," Royal Mail told its staff in the update.
The handout has gone out for four weeks' consultation with Unite and Communications Workers Union. A final decision is expected in August.
A CWU spokesman declined to comment at this stage.

Re: Gloucester - Royal Mail staff fear for jobs
Gloucester have have been waiting for the hammer to fall for at least 5 years
when Oxford was preferentially chosen for absorption into Swindon They had a reprieve !
many said this was for political reasons
A theory backed up by quality figures that showed gloucester (and swindon) below oxford
in the year prior to closure.
Nobody should be surprised that RM is is moving on this as Gloucester was never really off the carvery menu.

I think the plan is to move the traffic to Bristol and then centralise deliveries on the existing site.

That makes sense ,because its an old site/ building and is not big enough or suited for expansion.dodger162 wrote:I think the plan is to move the traffic to Bristol and then centralise deliveries on the existing site.
you could get a lot of sorting frames in there though.
