I would say that most people wouldn't look so hard for a way to compliment the service but would probably be moved to comment on poor service.

More true than you may think one of our blokes was delivering one of those Special Delivery tall boxes with flowers to an old folks bungalow on a Saturday morning about 1015, knowing we closed at 1200 then and seeing a wheelchair in the porch, he signed for it and put it in the porch - she complained and he WAS sacked - a full timer who was a union member and supporter.

I've a few complaints about driving, if it was a normal everyday car/van nothing more would be said but because it's a RM van I'm an easy target, the last complaint turned out to be a Fire Service van but no apologies for me.

Today I got an Oi !! which I didnt take any notice of then I heard an even louder Oi !!, turned round and said "Sorry thought you was calling a dog, I dont answer to Oi my name is Dave or postman , he replied "this letter you posted yesterday can't you f++king read , its for next door."
I replied " yesterday was my day off it wasn't me but I will take it". and he replied "WHATEVER"
I was going to say to him next time you can get your own letters from the Delivery Office,
Can you do that to ignorant Bar Stewards??

No, you cannot do anything to the ignorant pr**s

They can swear at you with no action, if they thump you RM will take their side! If their mut bites you you would not have followed procedure.

Might sound a bit naive and I could probably look it up somewhere (if I had the time!) but is it really Gross Misconduct to sign for a recorded delivery item on behalf of the customer? What if the customer has indicated that they are happy for you to do it?

Anything and everything is gross misconduct if you are a non conforming postie with a full time contract.

The customer is the sender so it's unlikely that they have indicated that they are happy for you to do it.

Fishtank, good point, didn't think about it that way! However, couldn't the signature be regarded as evidence of delivery (as in the item has reached its intended destination) rather than being a receipt signed for by the person it is addressed to? After all, it isn't always the person on the address label who signs for the item is it? Also,if the addressee is receiving something they have ordered and paid for then aren't they actually the customer? I'm interested in this because I have had people say that if the item is postable would I mind signing for it on their behalf?

Bottom line is then, if someone has asked you to do this and you do - could you be liable to a 'charge' of gross misconduct? Is the risk too great to take the chance of helping people out or should we be totally black and white about it and slip everything?
