AS A POSTMAN Mick Cumbers is used to delivering the news.
So when the 55-year-old was offered the opportunity to front his own news programme on the Royal Mail's TV channel – shown to over 100,000 posties across the UK – he jumped at the chance.
The South Woodham Ferrers resident will host a weekly news show, aired in 1,400 delivery offices across the UK.
He has just returned from three days' training at ITN – where he was put through his paces by news anchor Alastair Stewart.
"I was a bit apprehensive going into the studio but I soon relaxed," he told the Chronicle.
"The more you're in front of the camera the easier it becomes," said Mick, a postman of 28 years.
At ITN he was taught how to find his 'news voice', interviewing techniques and where to stand in relation to the camera.
"Always look at the lens.
"Never deviate from the lens," he joked.
"We then got to watch Alastair in action – he's such a natural. Hopefully, I can be half as good," added the father-of-two.
Mick won the chance to present the news after entering a competition that was open to all Royal Mail employees.
He will make a ten-minute news programme every week for six months that will be shown to all staff.
It will cover anything from the price of stamps to labour relations.
"It's the headlines about what's going on in the world of post," said Mick.
"If the price of stamps goes up I will no doubt have to explain to our workers why it's the case."
And Mick already has his sights set on bigger and better things and hopes his little bit of stardom can propel him to career in television.
"I still enjoy being a postie," said Mick.
"But you never know – I enjoy being in front of the camera and it might lead to other things.
"I thought I would give presenting a go so who knows?"

Where do they get the 100,000 and 1,400 figures from ?
There's no Royal Mail's TV channel where I work and I've never seen it.

Who will be working the camera and who writes the scripts, the cost of these alone are excessive for a company on the brink of being privatised besides these tv showings will be in WTLL in which the Line Managers cop out of doing something else, sheer waste of time and money
NO bags on shoulders please except for Moya who keeps her big fat wage packet in hers

Re: Postie Mick Cumbers will host Royal Mail's TV news
Mick needs to learn quickly how to properly pronounce Scottish delivery office names correctly, our office to a tee nearly all bust a gut with laughter this morning, Kirkcaldy and Montrose had us rolling in the aisles.
"Today’s workplace has become heartless and soulless. Employees are seen as units of labour, automatons, functionaries, objects for achieving designated tasks, and as costs to be minimised."

We've only got ourselves to blame. If we'd all read and swallowed the propaganda in the Courier then there would be no need for propaganda TV
