A Fishguard postie is putting his heart into a charity cycle challenge to say thank you to an organisation that helped keep his daughter alive.

Richard Evans is raising funds for the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Cymru to show his gratitude for all the help and support his daughter Gwen received as a baby.

Now a thriving 13-yearold, Gwen had heart surgery when only eight months old after a routine check-up diagnosed problems.

“It was a really difficult time for us as a family when Gwen, at such a young age, underwent surgery to correct a heart defect,” he said.

“Gwen is doing really well, and is looking forward to watching her dad get on his bike for the BHF.”

The pedalling postie, who has other family members who have suffered from heart disease, will set off from St Davids tomorrow (Saturday).

He will cycle a 50-mile circular route ending his challenge back at the city.

“This is the first time I have done this challenge for the charity,” he added.

“I thought that this was a way of saying thank you to BHF for all the help and support we have had for Gwen.”

Local BHF fundraising and volunteer manager Jayne Lewis said: “I’m glad to see that Gwen is doing well having gone through such a lot at such an early age.

“It’s fantastic that the family want to support our work in heart research and the prevention and care programmes we undertake.

“I know it would mean a lot to Richard and his family if people supported his great cycling challenge. We wish him well and hope for good weather as he undertakes the cycling event.”
