JOINT STATMENT

New Handheld Advance Mobility Update

Further to the Joint Statement of the 11th of February 2011 regarding the Intermec CN3 scanner capability we are writing to you to brief you on progress made since then. Following considerable development work and exhaustive testing the next phase of this upgrade to our IT systems is now almost ready to deploy into our depots. The CWU have been fully involved in this process and also in the production of training materials to support the introduction of the new system into depots consistent with our mutual interest culture.

The new system will replace our current tracking system “Tracking Point” as well as streamlining the allocation of ad-hoc collections. SMS messaging will also be introduced enabling our drivers to notify customers that their delivery is on the way. The system will also be used to replace Tracking Point in the secure area and the bulk returns area at the National Hub.

The Intermec CN3 devices will have extra functions applied to them and will be used to replace the current wrist mounted devices used to track parcels into and out of depots and to routes. To do this the CN3s will be paired wirelessly with a new finger scanner. The Delivery Connect website will be upgraded to show the tracking events and to produce driver manifests and vehicle waybills. The new scanning system has a number of benefits and will particularly improve the way in which manifests are produced.

Ahead of the national rollout of the new system a number of regional Train the Trainer events will be held to enable Depot Trainers to deliver training in their depots. These sessions will be run jointly with the CWU and the first of these is in Leeds on May 9th 2012.

The system will be piloted in York depot from May 21st 2012 and Shrewsbury depot from May 28th 2012. Once proved in these depots the system will be rolled out to the rest of our depots throughout the summer.

We will continue to monitor progress at national level via our ‘Table of Success’ joint working approach and a formal review will be provided to the signatories of this joint statement within three months of completion of the roll out detailing any improvement recommendations. You should also be assured and recall that we have also agreed that if there are any issues of concern or adverse effects on the operation, on employees, on customer service, on productivity or achievement of incentives, then both parties will meet as a matter or urgency to resolve the issue.

Our thanks go to the PFW project team and Kevin Mitchley who represented the CWU on the project group and ensured that operational knowledge from a CWU member’s perspective was made available to the project team in the development of this kit. We are convinced that such joint knowledge share at the planning stage has positioned us well for a successful deployment and we thank all involved for their hard and dedicated work in getting us to this point.
