Senior CWU leaders will be speaking up for hard-working Post Office employees and defending the network at a roundtable discussion on the mutualisation of the Post Office in Westminster tomorrow.
The Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) department has organised the event, at which general secretary Billy Hayes will be accompanied by deputy general secretary Dave Ward and assistant secretary Andy Furey.
As well as the Unite union's Brian Scott, a range of other organisations have also been invited to the hearing, including the Federation of Small Businesses, Citizens Advice, Age UK, the Association of Convenience Stores and several others.
The Postal Services Act formally separated the Post Office from Royal Mail Group and, although the Post Office remains in full public ownership, the Act does provide for the possibility of future mutualisation - a broadly similar ownership model to that of building societies and charities - and tomorrow's meeting will focus on this issue in detail.
The CWU has put forward a detailed policy document (Building a Mutual Postal Office) in relation to this and Billy, Dave and Andy will set this out to the Committee.
"It's good to have this opportunity to put our members' point of view forward," said Billy, "which is based on the need to defend the network, protect the jobs, terms and conditions of Post Office workers and maintain this vital public service."

A 'strong message'
Does that mean it will include 'strong language'?
MPs will be quaking in their boots at the prospect of receiving such a message.
