A FORMER Royal Mail employee has admitted stealing money and gift vouchers from cards.

Thomas Adrian Jones, 50, of Cwmlan Terrace, Landore, admitted stealing up to £80 in money and four gift vouchers between February 14 and 21 at Swansea Mail Centre.

He also admitted taking £145 in money and a £5 voucher belonging to Royal Mail Group Limited on February 21.

Jones had been employed by Royal Mail for eight-and-a-half years.

Suspicion

Swansea Magistrates' Court heard a number of open cards and packets were found in Swansea Mail Centre and suspicion fell on Jones.

On February 21 surveillance was started towards him and he was seen taking a number of items.

In interview he admitted he had also taken items before that date.

He was given unconditional bail until May 15 when he will be sentenced. Royal Mail spokeswoman Val Bodden said: "Royal Mail has a zero tolerance approach to any dishonesty, and that stance is shared by the overwhelming majority of postmen and women who are honest and hardworking and who do all they can to protect the mail and deliver it safely.

Trust

It is a criminal offence to tamper with or delay the delivery of mail and anyone caught doing so will face serious disciplinary measures and Royal Mail will always seek to prosecute the tiny minority of people who abuse their position of trust.

"The safety and security of mail is of the utmost importance to this business and Royal Mail will not allow the actions of any individual to damage the good reputation of our thousands of hard-working postmen and women."
