A PLANNING application has been put in to knock down the former delivery office in Princes Risborough and convert it into flats.
The building at 11, Bell Street was closed by Royal Mail, who wanted to relocate the service six and a half miles away in Quilters Way, Aylesbury.
A petition of 3,500 names to keep a delivery office in the town was handed to Royal Mail HQ in London in March.
Campaigners have suggested other locations in the town, such as Regent Park, for the service, but have still not heard the outcome of their petition.
Applicant W.E.Black Ltd has applied to demolish the existing buildings and build one block comprising of six one bed flats and six two bed flats with associated parking, bin and cycle stores.
The house builders and developers plans to build on the former Whiteleaf Furniture site in Picts Lane were approved in October by Wycombe District Council (WDC).
Subject to planning conditions the council’s planning committee backed proposals for an outline application for 80 dwellings, with a mix of 56 homes and 24 flats.
In December WDC approved outline plans, including 47 flats and 49 houses, which were jointly submitted by Hypnos and W.E. Black.
The developers put the £475,000 forward to buy the former Royal British Legion memorial hall last year, which is next to the former delivery office.
The building was put on the open market by RBL HQ and W.E.Black Ltd put an offer forward to buy the building for the Risborough branch, but it was outbid by Chilterns Christian Fellowship.
At the time MD of W.E.Black, Eric Gadsden explained why they put the money forward. He said: Very simply it was because we do a lot of development in Risborough and we wanted to support more of what we see as a community facility.”
He said they would not develop it and added: “All the planning requirements absolutely restricted that building for community use- that is what we wanted to see.”
