MUMS were glum when their children’s hand-made Mother’s Day cards made as part of a class project arrived two weeks late.
Eastover Community School reception class created personalised cards and posted them five days ahead of the occasion on Sunday, March 18.
But all bar three of the cards from a class of nearly 30 youngsters arrived late – with many mums asked to pay a £1.12 surcharge.
Melanie and Darren Clay were among the disappointed parents when four-year-old Ruby’s card failed to arrive.
Melanie said: “The children had to do a lot of work, such as sewing on beads on the front of the cards, and they were really upset when they didn’t arrive by the Sunday morning.”
Melanie then received a notice asking her to collect her card on March 30 and was told there was a surcharge – which was dropped after she complained.
Darren added: “It was Ruby’s first experience of posting a card to her mum and despite being posted in plenty of time it didn’t get here in time.
“In a class of 27 students, only three got there, so a lot of children and mums were disappointed. With postage going up by 60% I hope they will provide a better service.”
A Royal Mail spokesperson said they would contact the school to explain what happened and to offer the children a visit to the delivery office.
She said: “On this occasion, the cards the schoolchildren made were of such a size and shape that they needed more than a first class stamp to cover the correct postage.
“Underpayment of items involves more administrative work for Royal Mail and therefore takes longer to deliver to the addressee.”
She said the surcharge reflected the cost of the extra work involved in notifying a recipient that an underpaid item has been posted.

"A Royal Mail spokesperson said they would contact the school to explain what happened and to offer the children a visit to the delivery office" which at the earliest possible age will give them the message 'work hard at school or you'll end up as a postman'.

So they're complaining because they didn't put enough postage on and they therefore didn't turn up in time? Right...
Does this rag smell of chloroform to you?
