Sentence adjourned on Anglesey sub-post office £14k fraud case

SENTENCE has been adjourned on a woman who stole more than £14,000 from a sub-post office and shop which she ran.

Margery Williams, 45, of Tan y Capel, Llanddaniel, Anglesey, who became sub-postmistress at the village in 2009, previously pleaded guilty to four counts of fraud against the Post Office after an audit in June last year uncovered four months of offending.

Sentencing against Williams had previously been adjourned after a court heard how she was in the process of re-mortgaging her home and was hoping to pay the money back.

Yesterday Mold Crown Court heard that the re-mortgage had still not come through.

But her brother-in-law Leonard John Griffiths had made out a cheque for the full amount, and that she would pay him back when the re-mortgage came through.

The judge, Mr Recorder Wyn Lloyd Jones, further adjourned sentence to allow time for the cheque to clear.

He said he wished to stress that he was not holding out any promises on sentence but the fact that the money had been repaid would be an important part of mitigation which he would need to take into consideration.

But it was a very serious case and he could give no indication what kind of sentence she would receive, he added. The court heard how Williams ran the sub-post office which reopened in 2009 after villagers paid £15 each to buy the building.
