A huge new distribution centre will create up to 400 jobs in Lancashire.

The Royal Mail Group is proposing a 300,000 sq ft distribution centre on Revolution Park at Buckshaw Village, between Leyland and Chorley. The ‘North West processing centre’ for postal arm Parcelforce Worldwide will be a hub of activity with two massive building housing 400 staff, more than 300 parking spaces, and space for over 200 lorries.

The scheme, planned for land between Wolseley and Stewart Milne homes, is owned by Evander Properties, who are also behind a similar scheme to bring a distribution centre for supermarket giant Waitrose to the village.

Royal Mail said the proposal would bring a ‘large investment’ to the area.

Spokesman James Eadie said: “The planning application relates to a potential new Parcelforce Worldwide site in the north west of England.

“The land on which the application has been made does not currently belong to Parcelforce Worldwide, and at this point no plans are finalised.

“The proposal, if it were to proceed, would represent a large investment in Chorley and would create a significant number of jobs in the area.”

Neil Dickinson, director for Evander Properties confirmed the plan would create up to 400 new jobs.

He said: “We are very pleased to have attracted Royal Mail to the park.

“All of the consultation has been started and largely completed and we are expecting to have the application before Chorley Council’s planning committee on April 24.

“We have have been in dialogue with Royal Mail for some months.

“The application has been well received and having a significant employer and investor like Parcelforce is a good thing for any local authority in this current climate.”

News of the jobs has been welcomed in the community and by community leaders.

Kaye Davies, chairman of Buckshaw Village Community Association, said: “It’s great news for the area and a real boost in the current climate.

“We want to make sure people know about this so the jobs can go to local people.

“Evander have taken on board resident’s concerns, particularly in relation to how the commercial development will overlook the Stewart Milne and Redrow and Barratt development nearby so we are very pleased.”

Chorley MP Lindsay Hoyle also welcomed the news, saying: “This really is positive news and comes at the right time as we see unemployment in Chorley rising.

“It’s really important for the future of the economy locally and it certainly makes Buckshaw Village sustainable.

“This will create opportunities for local people, and that’s what it’s all about.”
