Re: save money - make doms part-time
We 'only' have one manager and he still does bugger all. He comes in at 6am, chats to his mates on the IPS (he used to be a postie in our office) until about 8am, goes into his office for the conference call at 8am then goes home at about 9am. Then he comes back for the 1300 conference call so he can pretend hes been at work all day. The DSM added the afternoon conference call last year to try and stop managers going home early, but most of them either go and come back or do the conference call from their work mobiles at home. Our union rep basically runs the office, covering all the duties and overtime and DOM support does all the office work.

Sounds like a laugh.
How much of a head start do we have to give them and can we use dogs or just rifles?

if ours arrives late , like he sometimes does, we all know what to do and get on with it , we dont need all these managers, get rid of them or get them on duties posting!

Visited our office last week, we were given the question we were to ask. No surprisesStormproof wrote:Whichever office Moya is visiting next perhaps someone can ask the question regarding part time LM's/DOM's. Lets face it the idiots would'nt be qualified to manage elsewhere, infact I can't think of anywhere that would take that lot on in a supervisor role.

Have a heart, folks.
Think of the detrimental effect upon the coffee industry.
Sales would halve, thousands of workers would have to be laid off, share prices would plummet.

Re: save money - make doms part-time
I really feel sorry for each and everyone of you that has posted a reply on here, it must be terrible having to put up with DOMs & DMs with the skills you say they have, or dont have, why dont you put your names forward to becoming a manager if you honestly think it that easy. Ive done both roles and OPG since joining the business, and yes deliveries are tough but believe me being a manager is not an easy ride, i think mouths should be kept shut unless you know the truth or have experience of either role.

Nice to hear from you again jumbo.jumbo137 wrote: i think mouths should be kept shut unless you know the truth or have experience of either role.
The problem with your statement is that they all have experience...of poor management.
That's why they have every right to criticise.
It may be a tough job,it may be ten times harder than being an OPG but if you're no good at it....and even Mr Sawyer and Mr Hooper agreed that many Royal Mail managers aren't...then you deserve the stick because not one of these sub standard managers has ever been shy come pay day or returned their bonus because they didn't think they had earned it.

Re: save money - make doms part-time
Yes hello again Fishtank
Without sounding as if Im blowing my own trumpet, the comments made from the previous posters do seem unfair, you probably wont believe me but i personally do a very honest hard working day, every day, covering all my remits the business requires of me. I consider myself hard but fair and value all members of staff, and reguarly take one for the team when defending them. Like any team you'll always have faster, slower, better ,worse and its how you manage that fairly thats counts. On numerous occasions I have asked for people to come forward and try the job, the reply is "no thanks". I do think that when the business is sold off, sometime after, the cull of managers will happen, but when that does i can asure you my head will be held high because Ive done the role to the best of my ability, and even if I am walking the streets again,( god help my knees) yes it will be hard, but I'll get used to it. ive worked alongside some very capable managers and the comments made do really sound bizarre

Re: save money - make doms part-time
Perhaps if bullying by managers was'nt so rife in RM managers may get more respect. The social skills of some management leave a lot to be desired and being shouted at is no way of motivating staff. Don't tell me you don't know of any bullying managers because that would be lying.
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets

Re: save money - make doms part-time
To be fair a lot of them are tongue in cheek and a thread like this will naturally attract members with management issues.jumbo137 wrote: the comments made do really sound bizarre
I do believe though that the quality of management in general within Royal Mail is mediocre at best compared with my experience of other industries and i believe rather than improving after two reports that should have acted as a wake up call it's actually declining again.
Just my opinion though.

Re: save money - make doms part-time
Well jumbo, I hope the name is not too descriptive if you're considering going back on the bag/trolley. In my not too limited experience the managers have volunteered for the post merely to get out of delivery/line work which they weren't particularly good at. It wouldn't be too unkind to say that many of them are intellectually challenged. You wouldn't believe some of the "on the spot" decisions that are made.

Re: save money - make doms part-time
It may be "demanding" being the manager , in my previous employment i was a manager, but all we lepers see between 6 and 10 is very very little work, protecting their own jobs, bullying opg's , getting that mail to frames , panicking when there's an audit etc. but surely it doesn't take another 4 hours per day per lm to "manage" no-one in the office?
Why are lino's paid full-time ??
