Royal Mail ban deliveries after Snowball the cat accused of three attacks on postmen

http://www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk/news ... -1-3696901" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Worried postmen are refusing to deliver mail to a Peterborough house after claiming they have been injured – by a small cat.

Ian Wilkinson (46), from West Lake Avenue, Hampton Vale, has been told by Royal Mail that deliveries to his home have been halted because of the allegations against his three-year-old cat Snowball.

A letter to Mr Wilkinson from the Royal Mail states that after the third attack on Wednesday at 2.30pm, a postman was left with “quite deep” cuts to a finger.

And the letter states that following a health and safety assessment, it has been decided that there is an unacceptably high level of risk during delivery to the house.

Officials say deliveries will be suspended until Mr Wilkinson finds a way to ensure Snowball cannot get to any other delivery officers.

But the Royal Mail’s claims that his usually timid moggy was attacking postmen while he was at work have left Mr Wilkinson baffled.

Just as much of a surprise was that the allegation suggests Snowball has found a way to mastermind her way past the letterbox’s two spring-loaded covers and double brush guard to get to the deliverer’s hand.

Mr Wilkinson said: “It’s ridiculous – a postman would have to struggle to even poke a hand to the other side.

“Everyone at work thinks it is hilarious – they have started calling her Ninja Cat and even Photoshopped her holding a Kalashnikov.

“You have to stretch to even get your hand through the letterbox. At worst, this is just a cat wanting to play with someone wiggling their fingers through it.

“I have never seen her attack a person. Sometimes she sniffs people’s feet when they come over for dinner.”

Mr Wilkinson, who works as a computer analyst for insurance giant the BGL Group, has now put a cage around the letterbox and hopes this will be satisfactory to resume the service.

He added: “They are in serious danger of making the Post Office a laughing stock.

Mr Wilkinson said he received a letter on November 15 stating that Snowball was the ‘potential hazard’.

The letter added: “Either ensure that your cat is kept away from the letterbox or provide an alternative safe delivery point.”

He wrote back to ask for clarification, but got no response until a letter was sent to him by Royal Mail delivery office manager Jamie Clarke on Thursday.

Mr Clarke wrote: “On 28/03/12 at 1430 hours... our delivery officer was trying to deliver a pack to you.

“When they opened the letterbox your cat clawed out via the letterbox and cut our delivery officers (sic) finger quite deep.

“This is the third such incident. As a result it has been found that the level of risk is unacceptably high.”

Mr Wilkinson does not know the details of the other two incidents took place.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman could not say when the other two attacks were because the sorting office had closed for the day.

She said: “There are around 4,000 animal attacks a year on Royal Mail people. These attacks cause great distress and in too many cases serious injuries.

“If we feel that there is a risk from any animal we are committed to working with the customer to agree simple steps to ensure that we can deliver the mail safely.”

Neighbour Glenys Armstrong (54) said: “Snowball is a lovely cat and friendly.”

Brave reporter visits the letterbox

REPORTER Matthew Reville yesterday put his fingers where the postmen fear to go.

Remembering his ordeal, he said: “The letterbox was only eight inches off the ground, so I had to crouch down low to get the angle of my hand right.

“I then pushed a cover with my left hand, while forcing the right past a brushed divider.

“I then heard some ominous paw steps from the other side - it was an animal approaching.

“I bravely pushed the second cover back. There was just enough space to get the tips of my finger inside the property.

“It was then that I felt some whiskers brushing on my knuckle. I stayed firm and kept my hand steady. She licked it.” :Very Happy

Not wanting to be rude, but even I know (as an owner of 4 cats) that they can cause pretty deep scratches when they are "playing". I used to deliver to an address where the cat used to stick it's front leg out to "play" with my hand as I was delivering the mail. It got to the point where I'd have to lift the letterbox flap with the toe of my shoe (yes, it was a floor level letterbox!) and then push the mail thru while the cat was attacking my shoe. Now, it wasn't too bad for me because I knew the cat was there.

So, I agree that the owner should do something about it, and it's not a laughing matter.

Cat's can do a lot of damage just playing. I too am a cat owner, Misty doesn't bother with the postie, but when we had our dog (alsatian cross), he stuck his cold nose up her arse once too often and got his face slashed for it. In need of 4 or 5 staples to his face. An angry cat is no laughing matter.

Just to echo the above, have owned cats in the past and been on the receiving end of their playful claws -

Could he not use one of those dog peg things?

That's discrimination - why can't we have "Cat Pegs" as well - there appears to be plenty of wild idea money in the business at the moment :)

Happened to me, bled like a stuck pick, made deliveries for the next few days a right pain in the finger so to speak.

Postal service resumes for Hampton home after anti-cat cage fitted

Postal workers called off their boycott of a house in Peterborough with an allegedly vicious cat on Wednesday (4 April).

Royal Mail said it has put the address back on its distribution list because the homeowner has put up a cage around the inside of the letterbox to protect postmen from his cat.

Ian Wilkinson (46), of West Lake Avenue, Hampton Vale, was taken off Royal Mail routes last Thursday after his cat Snowball allegedly scratched at a postman whose fingers poked through the letterbox.

On the same day, Mr Wilkinson fixed the cage the and told Royal Mail it was in place, in the hope service would be restored.

After five days without mail or a response from the Royal Mail, he contacted The ET. Our story drew international interest, with Snowball’s picture carried by numerous national newspapers and websites.

Mr Wilkinson said: “That the first I’ve heard of it, but it’s good news. I hope this is the end of it all.

“I told them about the cage last Saturday and didn’t hear anything back from the Royal Mail, and that’s why I went to the press.

“Since the story went into The ET my phone has been ringing off the hook, I’ve been getting loads of texts and comments on Facebook.”

Even before the cage was up, Snowball had to get past two spring-loaded covers and a double brush guard to get to a postman’s hand.

However, the simple cage adds another barrier to stop Snowball’s claws getting to postmen’s fingers, as has allegedly happened three times in the last five months.

Mr Wilkinson added: “The only problem will be if she figures out how to undo the latch and get into the cage to scratch them.

“But she would have to be a bit of a contortionist to pull that one off.”

Royal Mail was unable to give the dates of two previous alleged assaults on postal workers before the incident on Wednesday, March 28.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: “We have now resolved the issue with the customer, who has placed a safeguard around the letterbox.

“We have resumed mail deliveries to the address after temporarily suspending deliveries.

“This followed the latest incident on March 28, which involved the postman being injured by the cat and requiring hospital treatment.

“He had to go and update his tetanus inoculations. We always welcome the co-operation of our customers for taking responsibility for keeping their pets under control so that our staff can deliver mail safely.”

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

All animals should be in a safe inviroment when the owner requires their mail to be delivered or put a box up as an alternative........ Having said that paths should be fit to walk down, nettles, brambles and broken flag stones and letter boxes at the bottom of doors.... all a danger to the postie.... mind you some kids could do with a lead on them as well..
