Leeds and Wakefield: New post times as 32,000 are put on revised routes http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/n ... -1-4413898" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
New Royal Mail delivery rounds are being phased in for 32,000 addresses in West Yorkshire.
Some of the revised routes are already up and running in Whitwood, near Castleford.
The rest will be brought in across the WF6 and WF10 areas of Wakefield gradually over the next six weeks.
The reorganisation is part of a national programme aimed at making the service more efficient, and keeping prices down, said Paul Ruff, Royal Mail’s collections and delivery sector manager.
Last week the postal service announced it was increasing the price of stamps by 14p to 50p for second class, and 60p for first class stamps.
A number of delivery offices in the region, including three in Wakefield and 11 in Leeds, already use the new delivery system.
Postmen and women use trollies and vans rather than the traditional postie’s bag.
It allows one postal worker to deliver letters and small parcels simultaneously.
Mr Ruff said: “Unfortunately, fewer letters are now posted every day and Royal Mail needs to organise its delivery routes to be as efficient as possible.
“We also deliver more larger items and so are investing in equipment to carry these items to customers even more securely.
“The new equipment also reduces the risk of injury to our postmen and women from carrying heavier mail bags.”
On how this will effect consumers, he added: “Royal Mail will continue to deliver in the morning and for a longer period during the day.
“Many customers will continue to get their mail by lunchtime.
“The time customers receive mail will depend on where they live on the new delivery route.
“This may be later or possibly earlier than current delivery times.
“When mail volumes vary, we may need to adjust delivery arrangements and times.”
Royal Mail is writing to every address in Whitwood about the changes.
