The cost of posting a parcel is to go up by a staggering 70%

Royal Mail announced the rise today, just a week after it put up the cost of a first class stamp by a third to 60p.

Small parcels weighing under 100 grams now cost £1.58 to post first class.

But from April 30 they will cost £2.70, as the Royal Mail scraps its banding system for different weights and brings in a flat rate up to 750g.

It means lighter parcels weighing up to 500g will cost more to post while it will cost less for items weighing from 501-750g.

Second class parcel post will also be hit, with packages under 501g rising from £1.33 to £2.20 – a rise of 65%. But those weighing 501-750g fall by 41p from £2.61 to £2.20.

Watchdog Consumer Focus slammed the increases.

Robert Hammond, director of postal policy and regulation, said: “Such a huge price rise on small packets will hit the most vulnerable hardest, particularly older people and those on low incomes who rely more on the postal service.

“This is a complete redesign of Royal Mail packet pricing.

"Clearly this change will anger many customers and small businesses, as they will see it as charging a premium price for a more basic product.”

Royal Mail justified the price rises saying it had lost £1billion in the last four years on its parcel post service.

Spokesman James Eadie said: “Our prices for packets need to reflect the cost of handling and delivering them.”

Don't know what all the commotion is about. They want privatisation, well this is what happens. Prices rise with no benefit for the customers.

As with every privatisation of a public utilitie, prices will soar, and soar.
I'm mystified as to why the British never seem to learn this lesson.
I know we haven't been "officially" sold off to the highest bidder, just yet......but this has never been allowed to upset the agenda of the Labour/Conservative/Liberal salesmen.

£2.70 first class and £2.20 second class for packets.
Stop whingeing and go elsewhere if you can find anyone who can deliver them nationwide cheaper.
Just shows how ridiculously cheap they've been in the past.

A laudable sentiment, standing up for the most vunerable members of society but, in truth, are they going to be hugely affected by this change in pricing?
I mean how many 100gms packets do they post? (BTW you can't include your local cannabis dealer because although he makes great use of the service, he's hardly struggling to make ends meet.)

RM lost several hundred million on letters?
I'm sure I read we lost money on D2D.
Add to that the servicing of the pension deficit.
How did we make a profit ever?
