our office vote consisted of union members and non union members being taken into canteen with area rep and DOM and asked to raise their hand on acceptance of duties which they had very little info on...it was my day off so I didnt even get the pleasure of raising my hand with this jolly love in with non union members...Lincox wrote:Thats the crux of the matter (should have voted on). How many people are actually getting a vote, and how many are finding that their local rep has signed things off without even being consulted.

If they don't buy a ticket, they don't ride on the bus.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

apparently it depends on who is driving the bus at the time and how stupid the people buying the tickets areclashcityrocker wrote:If they don't buy a ticket, they don't ride on the bus.

Re: can royal mail force me to change my days off
Personally I would be sympathetic to giving the non-union members a vote on what are monumental changes to their working lives.......in the hope they would see the union as being an inclusive organisation they would like to consider joining.
But the fact remains that the terms and conditions of all posties is determined by collective bargaining with the CWU.
I don't see that non union members have a right to vote on anything. They don't have any right to determine our working conditions.

I suppose the final argument would be if a non-member feels that these changes will have such a fundamental affect on their working lives and they should have a say there is nothing to stop them joining the union, having their say and then leaving again.
It is not unfortunately....a minimum 12 month contract.

Re: can royal mail force me to change my days off
Somebody pays their subs and doesnt get a vote and someone who dosnt does..interesting concept(same thing happened when voting on the agreement-4 people never got voting papers)..and by the way every day I give advice to non union members in the hope they will join but they dont.Even after their free vote not one joined. There was no prior notice of the vote so no time for anyone to join and its a good job I am not paranoid or I wouldnt think it was merely a coincidence that it was my and several other of the awkward squads day off...anyway ancient history now

And as for raising hands in the canteen........
Some people might feel intimidated into voting one way for fear of appearing "weak" or not militant enough.
It takes very little effort to conduct a secret ballot.....
A box, some bits of paper marked yes and no, and a list of union members.
And as Stalin said.... the election is won by whoever does the counting.

It was made clear that on this revision vote only union members would be eligible to vote and amazingly it had the effect of galvanising many into joining the union

Run, rabbit run. Dig that hole, forget the sun.
And when at last the work is done. Don't sit down, it's time to dig another one

While being a reserve wont always get you 1 in 6,it's not very hard to have a rota where long weekends or Saturday's off is noted and shared around.kevster9966 wrote:are you meant to get a long weekend every 6 weeks? i havent had one since last august. is this writericorrect or not? im a reserve btw.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
