Deliveries suspended as posties in row over pavements

Post has not been delivered to a Staffordshire estate for four weeks in a stand-off with Royal Mail over the poor state of the pavements.

Royal Mail bosses suspended deliveries to four roads in Penkridge after a postman tripped on an uneven footpath on March 5 and suffered a serious injury.

Residents have had to travel seven miles to the Royal Mail depot in Stafford to pick up their letters.

The post has been stopped to Elm Walk, Lime Walk, Grange Road, and part of Wolverhampton Road.

Staffordshire County Council, which is in charge of most paths within the county border, says that the pavements on the Grange estate are the responsibility of residents as part of their contract with Wimpey, which built the homes.

Debbie Butler, of Grange Road, described the problem as “a nightmare” and said some of the residents were without post for a week before they realised what was going on.

Deliveries to some homes returned on Friday but others were today still without mail. Residents are due to hold talks to discuss what action to take next.

Royal Mail spokeswoman Val Bodden said the decision to suspend deliveries was “a last resort”. She said: “We will not compromise on the safety of our colleagues.

“We have already apologised to customers and issued letters to the affected addresses explaining our position.”

She added that Royal Mail is keen to resume deliveries to the estate as soon as improvements are made to the pavements.

Had a look round on street view, the paths do look a bit tatty, the image were taken in 2009 they must have deteriorated since then especially with the winters we have been having, the residents but have had a reduced council tax if they have an agreement with wimpy otherwise the council will have to make good if they are collecting full payment from them as for the rest of the town.

Its a legal mess.

My link shows street view and I think one thing causing deterioration is the number of cars parked on the paths. Thats on Grange road.

As to the other part I think the 2 walks are up that between the houses and you can see back in 2009 grass already growing up between the flags, by now they have probably lifted them and broken them apart.

.... and boy do they - Typical DM making it out to be 1 slab, but you can see from their own pictures that its more than one and appears to be a common problem in that area. Also the DM readers don't let us down frothing at the mouth about a worker delivering 1 letter to each house and equating that to carrying a heavy bag at he same time as delivering mail.

Ignoring The Daily Rant and it's poisonous readership,
86440245.DCgxtxm7.finger.gif
this hardly looks to be a reason to suspend deliveries.

We probably all face as bad, if not worse, surfaces daily. On this basis around half my walk would have to be suspended.

What's going on?

Just love this comment:
"I cant stop laughing at all the half-wit comments such as health and safety gone mad, sack the post men and back in the old days of rickets, diphtheria and ring worm etc...., we'd man up and get on with it. LOL I despair at the stupidity of some of the comments being posted. Regarding getting rid of RM. - Be careful what you wish for. The service wont improve it'll just cost you more. You sat on your fat backsides while the company was ripped to pieces and now moan that the service is rubbish. YOU ALLOWED THIS TO HAPPEN. I remember the posties striking to save it. WHAT DID YOU DO? This is one paving stone this is a whole street. Get the fat lazy residents to put a day aside and sort the mess out, its your area, at least have some pride in it... Its in this state because your idle and choose to blame others instead of being proactive and getting of your backsides and sorting it out.

The DM are claiming it's all over one paving slab, if you take a look at the pictures in the article, the walkway is a death trap
