Agreed, must be one of these peeps that think they never make any mistakes. I have several times gone off from replenishment box leaving padlock and keys hanging from the hasp. Can these managers honestly say that they never make stupid mistakes. It takes one second for your thoughts to drift off somewhere else, particularly if somewhere else has long legs

yes i left collection keys in a box and realised ten mins later and had to race back like the police to get them

once lost a mobile phone on a SD. Knew it must have fallen from the van at my previous delivery. told DOM and was told see if it will turn up. it did , someone found it in the street and handed it into the local PO. I can only think I must have caught it in someway as I lifted previuos delivery and dragged it out the van . it can happen to anyone.

I "lost" a special about three years ago, I posted through the door along with the rest of the mail and the p739 but did'nt realise at the time.
told the DIM I had lost it but had maybe delivered it to the customer.
The customer rang the office the next morning and said they had recieved it along with the red card and did they have another one to collect.

back then though I was told to just be a bit more careful and nothing else was said, but now I am not sure that would happen.

If it turned out that it was something other than a "lost" Special, if they don't suspend the individual it would look bad for them.
They are covering their arses.
They would have a very difficult conversation with their boss explaining why someone who was a security risk was allowed to carry on working.

We've had people who have lost specials and not been suspended, covering your back is one thing but this is taking the piss, plus it's a good job the office can cope with one person suspended.

But losing a "Special" does not make someone a security risk, it makes them forgetful or at worst incompetent.

A security risk is someone who looses them on a regular basis, or sells them, or fails to follow procedure on a regular basis. In my opinion they didn't cover their arses, they made a difficult and stressful situation even worse.

A more reasonable step would have been to move him on to indoor duties whilst the investigation was carried out. That would have also been more in keeping with the procedure as well.

Thats for the manager to question not us, I am just putting my opinion forward.

If we used the argument that your a security risk because you may have lost one, then every postman could be suspended in theory as there is a potential security risk between the Office and Delivery.

Also suspending someone for losing a special dos not fall within the Conduct Code guide.

I was just explaining why they use precautionary suspension when confronted with the situation.
I don't agree with it.
But if you go to a manager and say you lost a Special he has to first ascertain that you have genuinely lost it and not sold it to a bloke in the pub.
They use precautionary suspension to carry out that investigation to ensure you haven't "been dishonest" or "wilfully delayed the mail."

And if you have genuinely lost it because it was stolen while the bag was unattended that is still wilful delay.
