A MAN has been jailed after stealing £28,000 while working as a cashier at the Post Office and then using the money to pay for prostitutes.
A court heard that on the date Deryck Green was originally due to be sentenced for theft and false accounting, he was found collapsed at his home after taking an overdose - and a suicide note revealed the secret life which he had used the stolen money to fund.
Between December 2008 and August 2009, Green was working as a cashier at the Post Office section of Martins Newsagents in Esher, during which time he stole £28,000 and used the computer system to conceal what he had done.
It was not until an unannounced audit was carried out by managers that the theft was discovered, Judge Neil Stewart said during sentencing at Guildford Crown Court on Wednesday (March 28).
The court heard that at first Green, of Waldron Court, Church Street, Longbridge Deverill, Wiltshire, said he had committed the offences but would not admit them in court.
But he was found guilty of theft and false accounting by a jury and had been due to appear on March 13 to be sentenced.
Anthony Mitchell, defending, said concerns were raised when Green failed to appear at court.
Police visited his home where they found he had taken a large quantity of tablets of a "significant drug", Mr Mitchell said.
"This can be viewed as a significant attempt to take his own life," he added.
Police also found a lengthy suicide note that revealed Green's addiction to sex and his use of prostitutes, the court heard.
Mr Mitchell said: "This is a defendant that says for some years he has been living this secret life."
The court heard the 66-year-old had run himself into debt and told Mr Mitchell he was paying £100 an hour for a prostitute, or up to £160 depending on what he wanted to do.
Judge Stewart said the note was entitled 'Live Fast, Love Hard, Die Young'.
It was disclosed that much of the money Green stole from the Post Office was spent on prostitutes.
Mr Mitchell said that having opened up in his suicide note, Green now accepted culpability for the offences.
"As to why he did not accept this earlier, he merely apologises to the court," he added.
Green's wife, who he rents accommodation with, is unwell after suffering a seizure, which was possibly a stroke, the court heard.
Judge Stewart, sentencing the defendant on the day after he came out of hospital, said: "There is no question this is a theft in breach of trust."
He sentenced Green to 17 months' imprisonment for the theft and three months for false accounting, to run concurrently. One day on remand will count towards this.
No order was made for costs or compensation.

At least he didn't waste the money..............of course he could have just visited the naughty room and that would have been free.
Seriously though, why don't people just admit they steal the money because they want to and don't think they'll get caught, stop blaming it on anything else and take responsibility for your own actions.
