I maybe in a minority, but I think that the Royal Mail does a pretty amazing service considering the Universal Service and that postage rates are half the charge in France and Germany. The Royal Mail used to employ me as casual staff during Christmas holidays. So, I can sort of claim to be a former Post Man.
But it is using the Royal Mail as part of your direct mail, that I think it's now worth considering. Now, maybe you would never use snail mail, but if you know who your target maket is its worth considering.
When I run complimentary taster workshops I use email for marketing.
When I run fee paying £977+ seminars, I use direct mail for marketing.
As Drayton Bird teaches, I try to be channel agnostic.
Horses for courses
So why should you consider direct mail when the price is going up?
Precisely, because it is going up. Your competition will mail less. You prospects will receive less mail. Hence, your mail will stand out more. Don't you want to be noticed?
As your competition rushes to tweet, Facebook and email, do something different.
When everyone else zigs, you zag.
Be different, not better.

While i think R M does a great job.... times change.... an so much talk is about letter volumes reducing.
Packet and parcels obviously are doing the opposite with increased volumes and more profit one would assume.
That being one good reason for the increase in other carriers delivering parcels etc....
As more internet sales increase by people buying things cheaper or saving the public driving to shops. it is becoming an internet driven consumer society.... and people must have somewhere to post their E-Bay and other packets... at the Post office.
The question is will there be more or less carriers delivering against R M in 10 years time......no doubt R M will change the delivery system by then...probably drop sat delivery and have pickup points in some areas...and letter stamps £1 by then.
