Can't see many existing part-timers going for this. Working your day(s) off is the only way to get this to something like a living wage.

I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

We could easily have a system with limited, Parcels only for Saturdays. Done on a rotation every so many weeks wouldn't be hard to sort out.

we still need floaters to cover for people who are sick or on holiday. We can solve problem with absorbing by using the existing staff as we will have increased workload of post over 5 days. let say 10% leave due to early retirement and EVR and management cut. Royal Mail can save money on fuel and operating cost and paying less overtime due to more postmen available to deliver the mail.

This question was put to Mark Higson who responded by saying that it would be a signal to customers that Royal Mail were in decline and kill any opportunity to grow the packet market.

Work Mon to Fri, good idea, no sick leave, no holidays cos no cover. 1 thing I don't understand with these people, they said yes in the interview to Saturday working.

You have a good point. However, remember that many people have worked many years for the business. The goalposts have be moved. Significantly in many cases. When I started it was 5 hours attendance for a full timer. 05.15 to 10.15. Even allowing for a busy day they would be finished for say 11.30 latest. Due to the later starts AND lets not forget the LENGHTENING of the attendance to just short of 8 hours. Quality of life should be important for all. How many can honestly say that their weekend is great by the time they have finished? How many can honestly say that the DOM is still in the office when they get back to the office? The answer to both is... NOT many. As I have posted previously on this subject, the union has a lot to answer for. The decline in traffic did not happen over night and they should have foreseen the problems when they campaigned for 5 day working.dblad wrote:Work Mon to Fri, good idea, no sick leave, no holidays cos no cover. 1 thing I don't understand with these people, they said yes in the interview to Saturday working.

Well I suppose that is one way to look at it BUT lets just for example say the union pushed for a 35 hour week over the 5 days and deliveries were adjusted accordingly, do you imagine that would lessen the impact on the dole queue? It just takes a small amount of imagination to create a world where we all have a reasonable working life with a reasonable leisure time. The emphasis has been on working longer and harder and so leisure time is at a premium and of course people would look to having a two day weekend, but it doesn't mean they want to throw their colleagues on the scrap heap.97gaz wrote:This is why I am constantly considering leaving the Union. I've been a Union man for 38 years and a rep 4 times for two different companies. Then I come on here and I see people prepared to throw the people they've worked with for years on the dole. Just so they can have a Saturday off. And no, they won't get a job easily. Or at anywhere near the rate a postie gets.
I suspect all those clamouring for a Mon-Fri probably have some seniority and see themselves as safe.
Well yeh, let's have a vote but before we do let's chuck seniority out of the window and see what the result is then. I suspect the company would prefer to get rid of a lot of long timers before some of the new starters.

With natural wastage I think we could more or less get the numbers required. Let us not forget our colleagues in processing who are leaving or have already left the business as mail centres are closed.dvbuk55 wrote:Well I suppose that is one way to look at it BUT lets just for example say the union pushed for a 35 hour week over the 5 days and deliveries were adjusted accordingly, do you imagine that would lessen the impact on the dole queue?
