Oakham postie Wendy sets herself a marathon challenge for the London 2012 Olympics

AN OAKHAM postie has set herself a personal London 2012 challenge.

Wendy Walker, who delivers post to RAF Cottesmore, is taking part in the London Marathon on April 22, the Great London Swim on May 26, the Cambridge to Paris bike ride via London on July 12-15, the London Duathlon on September 9 and the London Triathlon on September 23.

Just one of these endurance tests would be enough for most people but super-fit Wendy thrives on challenge. Two years ago she did two half-marathons, a coast- to-coast cycle ride and some open-water swims. Last year she completed her first triathlon.

“I was absolutely gutted when I applied for tickets for the Olympics and didn’t get any. So I thought mmm! - should I do my own Olympics?” she said this week.

Wendy, 33, of High Street, Oakham, will be raising money for four charities - Help For Heroes, Macmillan Cancer Support, Guides Dogs for the Blind and the local air ambulance (DLRAA). A prolific fundraiser, she was last involved with the Help For Heroes Christmas stocking appeal.

She describes the 246-mile London-Paris event as one of her cycling dreams - another is to pedal from Land’s End to John O’Groats which, surprisingly, she hasn’t done yet.

Wendy heaped praise on her colleagues at the Oakham delivery office for their support and Catmose Sports Centre staff for helping her with training programmes.

“I like a challenge, otherwise I’d be watching tv,” she says.
