PO brands tiny dogs a 'danger' to postman

Post Office brands tiny dogs a ‘danger’ to postman and threatens to stop deliveries

Dangerous dogs have long been the bane of the postman’s profession, but these pet pooches seem two unlikely suspects to have hounded their local mailman.

Pomeranian pup Fred and Yorkshire Shih Tzu breed Honey have been accused of snapping at the postman’s hands, despite being too small to reach the letter box at their home.

Owner Maureen Rose, who walks her dogs on Hampstead Heath, received an “insulting” letter from her local delivery office threatening legal action and a stoppage on deliveries to her address unless she kept her pets under better control.

But it would be nigh-on impossible for wheezy Fred – an asthma sufferer – and Honey, who has to take medication for breathing problems, to even reach the letterbox.

On their hind legs the nine-year-old pet pooches stand just 12 inches off the ground.

Ms Rose, a 54-year-old former postwoman, said: “I love my dogs to bits, this is just persecuting the defenceless.

When I read the letter I just could not believe anyone was coming out with such proper rot.

“They’re like my little babies because I don’t have any children.”

In the letter, seen by the Ham&High, Ms Rose is accused of having a “potentially dangerous dog” which could threaten the postman’s safety.

Royal Mail spokeswoman Sally Hopkins claimed there are around 4,000 dog attacks on staff every year – some of which have led to serious injury.

She said: “Our main aim is to prevent attacks.

“If we feel there is a risk from a dog, or any other animal, at an individual address, we are committed to working with the customer to agree simple steps to ensure that we can deliver the mail safely.”

Ms Rose is considering legal action and claims some of her neighbours with small dogs have received similar letters from the Hornsey Road delivery office in Islington.

“One old boy with a Jack Russell has a letter box on a wall to the side of his door and he has also received a letter,” said Ms Rose, who lives in Archway.

“It just feels as if we have been targeted by someone who has something against small dogs.

“To be honest I just don’t understand it.”

The dogs are covered under the Equality Act.... :nana

They should make reasonable adjustments and lower the letter box.

Archway dog lover snaps back at RM to protect honour of dogs

Archway dog lover snaps back at Royal Mail to protect honour of her pet pooches

http://www.islingtongazette.co.uk/news/ ... _1_1328092" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

A doting owner of two tiny dogs has gone all the way to the Royal Mail head office in a bid to clear her pups’ names – after they were accused of snapping at a postman’s hands.

Maureen Rose – herself a former postie – was told her little Pomeranian pup Fred and Yorkshire Terrier-Shih Tzu cross Honey were “potentially dangerous” in a letter from Royal Mail.

She was left so distressed that she took her tale to the papers – and now she fears she could be kicked out of her home after the matter was raised by an officer for Homes for Islington (HfI) who read the story.

The 54-year-old, of Archway, is desperate for Royal Mail to retract its claims before matters spiral out of control.

She said: “I want a letter to clear my dogs’ names, so HfI gets off my back.

“I was talking to a housing officer on Tuesday about another issue and at the end of the meeting, she said you’re in breach of your tenancy if you have dangerous dogs.

“It’s just ridiculous. I felt like I was being threatened with eviction by the housing officer over my tiny pets.”

Ms Rose had already been warned her deliveries could be stopped by Royal Mail if she did not get her pets under control.

Yet she insists the nine-year-old pooches, which stand just 12 inches off the ground on their hind legs, are too small to even reach the letterbox.

The dogs also both suffer from breathing difficulties.

She added: “I have had them here for nine years and never had any problems, and I have always been upfront about them.

“Islington has lots of problems with irresponsible ownerss of dangerous dog – but I’m not one of them.”

Ms Rose wants Royal Mail to put it in writing that her dogs are not a menance to anyone.

She took her fight to the head office in Old Street, Finsbury on Tuesday and is now waiting for a response.

She also plans to lodge a complaint about the housing officer’s comments.

A spokesman for HfI said: “No threats of eviction have been made to any tenant on this matter.

“We have not received any complaint from the postal service, although the council’s conditions of tenancy would be breached if a tenant allowed any animal to cause a nuisance to anyone in the local area.”

I am sorry but is this ex-postie looking for trouble where none exists. The authority ADVISED her of their policy over dogs causing a nuisance, they did not accuse her of having one. It would be remiss of the authority not to so advise her when they became aware of the story in the press. As to the dogs not being able to jump at the letter box because of their medical conditions , is she expecting her former colleagues to make a medical diagnosis in a matter of seconds. What probably happened is that someone new to the round posted her letters and the dogs jumped at the letter box. In line with RM policy this postie then advised local management that dogs at the address had jumped at the letters as they were posted. Management also following policy informed the resident and asked them to address a potential hazard. No claim of dangerous dogs attacking a postie, just an attempt to address a situation before it became a problem. As an Ex-Postie she will know this and I therefore thinks she doth protest a little too much.
