In general

Post by L Tommo »

Most people in this job that are 40+ have been in a while. Its getting less but the more senior people are in the 45-50 bracket..

There are some like my old man and you TBT's that have less service at that age.. IE other jobs before..

My old man has just over 10 years and is 60+ i am 36 and more senior to him. I call him LAD at work as most do to each other in East London MC... Its just the name for all ... Mostly Juniors..

Seniority is fair but i do think it comes with a service to others more junior to yourself to help and not hinder... This is where i feel the very senior people who have had it very easy before now find it hard as it is... But they do in some cases shite on the junior bods and this causes unrest.. Ive seen it...

Anyone i can help less seniority than me i do try to help if they want it?? Some just know it all so feck em but over all if everybody went and supported everybody then this UNION would thrive and everyone would get a fair crack at the whip... Just my opinion and as Seniority is the way we run things and it works better than any other way ive seen or heard.. If anyone can tell any different then im all ears??????

  :Very Happy  :Applause

Respect to all and thanks for taking the time to have a go on my Poll!, It seems we have an overall majority of 72% which wouldn't take much to work out that people are genuinely decided that Seniority is an overall fair selection process within the business.

Keep up the good work and lets hope that the future holds a better one without the likes of Leighton and Crozier. We survived 300 years without them lets strive to survive 300 more!!

Seniority - well it's not perfect, but it's better than having the managers give the
better jobs and Annual leave to their mates, the blue-eyed boys, the a**elickers,
and strike breakers.

management don't like seniority because they like to pick their favourites for the easier jobs. :no no

Welcome plodding postie :wave

We've had this discussion many times in our office, and my view is this:

No system of allocating jobs or annual leave is completely fair. You'll always result in some people getting disappointed (e.g if there's only one vacant duty and two people want it, someone has to miss out). But as far as I am concerned, seniority is the least unfair method of resolving these things. As Wild Cat says, most jobs at Royal Mail are easy, or can be made so with a modicum of relevant training. At least when seniority is used to select the successful applicant, EVERYONE in the office would know if there's corruption going on, e.g. if Bill with 2 years service gets the job ahead of Ben with 15 years service, so it deters managers from handing out jobs to their mates. In theory, at least.

I've worked in outside industry, and seen the blue-eyed-boy syndrome at work and it leads to a demoralised and demotivated workforce. In many companies, if getting a more challenging or better role in the organisation depends on whether you drink with the right crowd / play golf with the boss / sleep with the boss, those that get passed over for better jobs just leave or stay & do a really half-arsed job because their prospects are limited and they adopt a 'feck 'em' attitude :left:

Seniority, or management indescretion? ............... Has to be seniority, every time. Just imagine management being able to reward their lapdogs, at
the moment their ability to reward their favourites is minimal, if seniority goes, then the floodgates open up for them.........And we don't want that, do we?

When I joined Rm I was the junior, I had do be on the float and work nights mid -0800.
Now as i progress over the years I move from the harder jobs to the easier ones.
So now I have had to put up with the hard jobs, as I was junior...others now want to move the goal posts!

We only have seniority for duties.Any overbooking on leave is done by pulling lots. This has been going on for a couple of years now so how come offices have different methods when we were told that this was the way it had to be.I have done 25 years but have been turned over more than once by a newer postie with only a couple of years.(not their fault I know)
Not very happy now that our union reps let this through without us being given the facts.

NOT IN ALL CASES , take me for instance , ive been doing the same round now for two years , i haven't actually signed for it because its never been put up since the last lad left. Now i kinow the round well, I get on with many people on the round. Its a hard round to do because of all the buisnesses and its length. Im used to it and don't want to change.

NOW then if that round was put up to be signed for , i wouldnt get it because ive only been a postman two half years . So is it fair that i graft everyday , get to know all the people and how the buisnesses work only to be told that when it is advertised for full time ( im only part time) i have no chance of getting it.

Then what will happen is that some old fellow will get , do it for a while , then realise its to hard for him , get taken off it , and then im back on it again , but still on part time hours.

I SAY NO THAT AINT FAIR IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES :speak to the hand

In my experience the only people who complain about seniority are people who haven't got any!!!

It may not be 100% fair but it is the only method we have that keeps managements dirty fingers out of the process!! At the end of the day everyone ebters the business and seniority is part of the terms and conditions we all sign up to. I'd rather wait my turn than be part of some management blue eyed boy/girl selection process anyday

Where I work annual leave is decided on a seniority basis, those that's been here longest have first choice ( Christmas, school summer holidays etc.) and us newecomers are left with November, early February etc.

Seniority for leave was removed under the way forward and should not be used for leave. All units should have rotational group picks for leave

our AL works on rotation basis which made me happy being the 2nd most junior in office. mind you have found that means squat as on my 1st pick i only got 2 out of 3 of my 1st picks. got told its was because im in specalist leave group, which would then have made me 1st to pick in that group.... go figure.
