The boat responsible for delivering Royal Mail post around the Isles of Scilly has undergone a major overhaul after six years of servicing the Islands.
The Redbay cabin RIB (rigid inflatable boat) the Swift Lady was purchased by the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company to carry Royal Mail to and from St Mary’s, Bryher, St Martin’s, St Agnes and Tresco.
During the past six years, the vessel has completed approximately 3,800 trips around the Islands, delivering and collecting mail as well as some perishable foods all year round and in all weathers.
The Swift Lady is now ready to continue deliveries, following general hull repairs and upgrades carried out by Falmouth Boat Construction and new tubes being fitted by Henshaw Inflatables Ltd of Wincanton.
Kevin Ayres, Marine Superintendent at the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group said: “The Swift Lady provides a vital service to the Isles of Scilly, and is contracted to carry all Royal Mail. The repairs and upgrades carried out by Falmouth Boat Construction mean that she is now ready for several more years of service to the Islands.”
Bernie Bagley, Director of Falmouth Boat Construction added: “Once again we are pleased to have offered our services to the Steamship Company, particularly given the vital link this craft delivers to the residents of the Isles of Scilly. The repairs were complex and widespread, drawing upon all of the skills held at the yard including road transport as part of the service. We wish Swift Lady a speedy return to her postal round.”
