A dedicated postman who joined the company to make cash at Christmas has landed a long service award after three decades with Royal Mail.
Gary Keen landed a full time job with the company in 1982 and nearly a decade later met his future wife Jill, 50, while doing his round in Dagenham.
The 51-year-old, of Oval Road North, Dagenham, was hailed as a “true ambassador” after receiving his Royal Mail award last month.
The dad-of-one said: “I’ve done deliveries on a bike, by van, I’ve done collections with a van – I’ve done everything.
“Dagenham delivery office is a great place and I work with a great bunch of colleagues.”
Gary joined Royal Mail as a casual in the lead-up to Christmas 1981. He was given a part-time post in February 1982 then landed a full-time job in September of that year.
In 1991, he met Jill while doing his round in Oval Road, saying he got “cute hellos” from her.
The relationship blossomed and they now have an 18-year-old daughter Hayley, who goes to Havering Sixth Form College.
Gary currently works in the back rooms at the delivery office in Boxall Road, Dagenham.
Delivery office manager, Robert Foulger, said: “We appreciate the dedication, contribution and commitment that Gary has made to the business through his long service with Royal Mail.
“The long service award he has received gives Royal Mail an opportunity to say thank you for his loyal support.”

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
