Hate Mail: A Mailman's Revenge Shows Workers Still "Go Postal

This is a US article, but I think relevant to Blue Shorts, but as its 5 pages long I'll just post a link here. http://www.sfweekly.com/2012-03-07/news ... st-office/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

However, its scary how much of it we can recognise.

Blue shorts?
Do they have their own forum now?
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Yes it is very scary how much it sounds like my office. One person describes the manager as "despicable dishonest and not trustworthy " That is exactly how I describe my manager.

Why not use a Mail van?

Oh, because the tyre - sorry, tire was flat - the door wudn't shut, there was no fuel and the heater didn't work.

So, same as over here then?

A few selected quotes from that article are so close to home it's scary.....

"Critics say that postal managers are still not held accountable for needlessly abusive treatment of employees, despite the grisly lessons of the past few decades. The problems might even be growing more acute in an era when the Postal Service is suffering from a lack of revenue and cutting jobs and service as a result."

"Bryant alleged on the stand, and in interviews, that Bustamante harassed him by giving him undesirable mail routes to walk and micromanaging his performance. In particular, he cited an incident in which the supervisor wrote him up for delaying mail when he returned to work after a knee surgery and was moving slowly as a result."He tries to pile up a lot of disciplinary action on you, so he can hold it over your head whether or not he can fire you, and then he asks you to do him favors," Bryant tells SF Weekly."

"While it might not be back-breakingly difficult, a postal employee's day hews to a rigid, mindless, and fast-paced schedule. Even minor deviations can bring a manager's rebuke. Workers function as automatons, with no room to improvise or think creatively about how to do their jobs.

"It's just the stress level of the work. It's not hard work," says Ramirez. "You're given so much to do every day, and so much time to do it, and nine times out of 10 you have more work than time. You're always behind." He adds, "You can't use your own brain to do a good job. They have a way of doing it. It doesn't matter if it's stupid or not — they want it done that way. If you could think for yourself, you could make it a lot more tolerable for yourself."

"Each workday is defined by managers' obsession with squeezing more work out of fewer workers, in part to pull down bonuses for supervisors whose stations meet or exceed objectives for the quantity and speed of mail delivery.

Tension between workers and bosses is aggravated by the near-military culture that has defined the post office hierarchy since it was created two centuries ago. Mail carriers must follow direct orders from their supervisors, leading to what some say are arbitrary abuses by bosses."

"Ramirez describes bad postal managers this way: "If we were at a party or a dinner or somewhere else, and I talked to you the way [managers] talked to you, you would hit me in the mouth." However, "If they gave you a direct order, you had to follow it."

Best postie I saw was in Tuscany. Little putt-putt scooter, short sleeve shirt, shorts, no helmet.
Strolling thro beautiful olive groves/vinyards, talking to all the locals on his way. Time for everyone.
No rush, no hurry, totally chilled/relaxed...

Saw him a few times when I was jogging around the area.

Maybe I just imagined it as "Postal Heaven..."
