hii all, currently have a conditional job offer within the royal mail, waiting for the security checks to pass. i have a couple of questions.
have i got anything to worry about not getting the job? i have no criminal records etc but i am scared that i wont get the job for some reason, as this job is really good pay and also i get to try something new.
also what do you do in the induction?
is it a hard job?
and aslo will there be plenty of overtime?

If you have no hidden crime sprees lurking in your past you are probably okay.

However, being so large its not unknown for Royal Mail to recruit a surplus of people and then employ them as and when positions became available
so you may be waiting some time before you get a place, or you might get one straight away.

Induction is an indoctrination (ooops sorry) introduction to Royal Mail and how it operates. You should also be made aware of the CWU. The most important part will be a safety and H&S brief.

You may also get a tour of the office and an introduction to your mentor.

Also my friend works at the office I am going for and he said 6 jobs are available so I am not to sure if they will rush or take there time with the recruitment. Sooner the better I hope.

One more question is it an hard job to do? I am worried about messing up when sorting the mail out in bags and delivering them.

Its a hard job to get used as there are a lot of different processes that you need to take on board, and throwing up and bundling up a round can seem very confusing at first. Also the physicality of the job surprises most as your are walking on an average day between 7 and 10 miles a day, with a bag weighing up to 16kg (32lbs) and a steady pace of around 2 mph for the day, but taking into account stopping and starting its about 4mph in reality.

However once you have settled in and got used to it is a very good job.

hi, just a quick update. passed the pre employment checks. I am now awaiting confirmation for the induction date. hopefully they will get in touch soon. how ever if they dont get in touch with me before the end of next week should i give them a email?

Depends on the office - you may get a day of induction which is basically the background to Royal Mail, documentation (signing the official secrets act), health and safety and introduction to the Union and a tour of the office.

You might not get the above, but in any case, you'll be passed to an experienced postie who will instruct you on the basics of the job, and they should also accompany you for at least a few days showing you the ropes. When I do this with newbies, the first day I carry the bag and basically point at where they should be going, and what they should be doing at certain times. The 2nd day I split the bags but still go round the delivery with them. The 3rd day they carry the bags and we share the delivery. By then if they have anything about them they should have picked most of it up and its just ironing out problems and clarifying things.

By the way, ask questions when you are being trained, its far better to ask too many questions at the start, than telling the manager later on why you did something wrong.

Take a notepad and a map as well for the first few weeks they really help.

Best practice is to keep you on the same walk for at least 6 weeks to allow you to learn the job and gain confidence.

Yes but don't worry it all becomes clear when you see a frame - its usually (bot not always) laid out in delivery order. All you need to do is plan where you get the bags sent to, or where you replenish from the van if on P&L deliveries.

For the first few months as clash says you should be kept on the same round. After that bedding in period though you MIGHT be moved from round to round.

thanks for the help. i am not fussed if they put me on different rounds. if they train/ show me to the best abilities i should be fine. i am just nervouse about my first day and not picking things up straight away as i have never worked in this area of field before.

That is I am afraid a "how long is a piece of string question". There is no average at it all depends on so many factors its difficult to give a definitive answer. I have seen it be as short as a week, and as long as 6. When I started it was 10 weeks and no skeletons were in my closet.

What exactly are the pre employment checks? I have received my email saying I have been offered a position of driver postman, pending security checks.
Is it just a basic criminal record check etc? Or does it include credit checks and stuff?
