SORTING offices in Cam and Wotton-under-Edge are not to be affected by a current review of Royal Mail processes in the county.
Royal Mail announced last week the launch of a six-month consultation into the future of the Gloucester mail centre.
The consultation is part of a nation-wide review of the company’s operations forced by a fall in mail and a rise in electronic communications. In Gloucester mail volumes have fallen by 27 per cent in the last four years.
Royal Mail regional operations director Mark Ellis said: "Change is absolutely essential to meet customers’ expectations of a world class postal service, ensure we operate efficiently and provide a great quality of service in a smaller and radically changing market.
"Any change to our mail centre in Gloucester will, unfortunately, impact on some colleagues."
A spokesman for Royal Mail said the consultation was about the Gloucester sorting office and did not affect any of the 22 delivery offices in the county including the two at Cam and Wotton-under-Edge.
However, union leaders have said it is too early to say whether or not any changes to the Gloucester mail centre will have wider implications for the county’s postal service.
Paul Trehearne, secretary Communications Workers Union (CWU), said: "Obviously the consultation process has only just commenced. We won’t know what Royal Mail’s options will be until May of this year.
"We don’t know what impact it will have on offices yet.
"We’ve got some suggestions for what we are pursuing but we will contact our members first before outlining them."
Gloucester mail centre processes mail posted to and from the Gloucester area, as well as the mail collected from business customers, post boxes and Post Office branches in the area. This mail is then passed to the 22 delivery offices that serve the GL postcode.
Gloucester mail centre has been processing mail since 1950 and employs approximately 450 staff.

So called 'journalists' don't know the difference between a Mail Centre and a Delivery Office or two
but that makes an easy story for them.
