A POSTMAN who hoarded 33,584 letters and packages said he was “overwhelmed” by junk mail he had to deliver every day.

Ex-Royal Navy sailor Anthony Brierley, 49, said he put most of it in his car boot.

Yesterday the Falklands veteran was jailed for 16 months after suspicious Royal Mail investigators launched an undercover probe by posting dummy packages on his round.

When they searched his home in Oldham, they found items in his cupboards and wardrobe taken over 19 months.

Of those, 21,686 were commercial mail the Royal Mail was paid by firms to deliver. He was also stealing cash from greetings cards to spend on cigarettes.

From the 786 cards he retained, he claimed he kept around £200 for himself but donated most of the money taken to charity.

Judge Leslie Hull said at Manchester Crown Court: “It was wholesale theft which must have caused untold heartache.”

Is junk mail really worhwhile going to jail for? And why is there such a difference in the sentencing, may otherd have done the 'same amount of crime' but not been given such a stiff sentence. But I've still no symapthy, even for a war veteran.

I can think of many reasons why private cars should not be used on delivery but making theft easy to carry out
and difficult to spot is the one that should persuade RM to enforce their policy once and for all.
