Recently, I was astonished to find a lengthy queue of people waiting to collect parcels from the Royal Mail sorting office.
All those waiting, including myself had had notice of a parcel unable to be delivered, and were authorised by card to collect from the West Bars depot.
I waited for over 40 minutes for my parcel – others had waited longer. There was only one counter assistant: there were other staff available in the building, as they could plainly be heard.
In my case, the parcel was marked URGENT. It was also marked “live biological material” although not a delivery requiring a signature.
I understand that Royal Mail employees are not allowed to leave items with a neighbour, so this policy is bound to generate more members of the public calling at the West Bars office
As this is how the policy stands, it follows that more personnel are needed at the collection point.
It seems that this problem needs addressing urgently by the Royal Mail management.
