40 year old Shreddies discovered in village post office sold to American

A VILLAGE post office has seen one product fly off the shelves this month - boxes of 40-year-old cereal.
Whitwell Post Office owner Norma Fears discovered several boxes of Nabisco Malted Shreddies behind the shelf boards of her shop during a clear up. It is estimated that the boxes are from the 1970s.
The Comet previously reported how the first of the boxes had been sold for nearly £160 and now, several weeks on, all four boxes have been flogged on eBay, raising £310 for charity.
“The whole thing has just been hilarious,” said Norma. “People come into the shop for the first time saying they have read about it.
“It just all went crazy. We couldn’t believe the boxes would sell for that much.”
Three of the boxes have now been delivered to Slough, but one has gone much further afield to America.
The boxes, which are unopened, have AristoCats stickers inside. It is thought that these could be the reason behind the interest shown from bidders.
One of Norma’s customers, Dave King, put the products on the bidding site. The money that has been raised will be split between his charity of choice, Keech House Hospice, and Norma’s choosing of Mencap.
“We have someone in the village who is a driver for Mencap and is very involved in the local branch,” added Norma.
“I just thought that the money is being raised in Whitwell, so may as well go to a charity that has links with the village.”
