Malmesbury sorting office bought by local firm

THE Royal Mail sorting office in Malmesbury high street has been bought by a local firm with an offer to keep a parcel collection facility open.

Mindvision Media, run by husband and wife team Justin and Ruth Jeffrey, have been in talks with Royal Mail since the announcement last summer that it was moving the sorting operation to Royal Wootton Bassett.

They eventually signed on the dotted line last week and paid more than £275,000.

Ruth said: "We've heard so many rumours about what is going to happen to the property - everything from becoming a nightclub to being converted into a block of flats.

"We hope it will put minds at rest to know that it will continue as commercial premises, occupied by a local company that supports and services the needs of local businesses."

There were fears that residents would lose the collection point for parcels and undelivered post.

But the couple, whose 12-year-old graphic design and web development business has outgrown it’s current base at Malmesbury Business Park on Tetbury Hill, have offered to continue with it and are awaiting the Royal Mail’s response.

"We're really looking forward to moving into the high street but at the same time we're keen to facilitate a smooth hand over and Royal Mail will be able to stay on in the property until the end of the summer," said Justin.

Paul Baker, chairman of the town's chamber of commerce welcomed the news.

"We're delighted. Its great for the high street that it will be occupied immediately, and fantastic news that Mindvision, a Malmesbury business, is expanding," he said.

The decision to move sorting to a larger more modern base at Royal Wootton Bassett was blamed on falling mail volumes and tough trading conditions.
