A TERRIFIED shop worker pressed a panic alarm after a knifeman burst in and ordered him to hand over the takings.
The would-be thief pulled out a blade and threatened Stephen Gray but was forced to flee the scene empty-handed after the young employee hit the alert button and told the thug he had just 30 seconds to get out before cops would arrive.
The frightening incident took place at the Post Office in Lochaline Avenue, Foxbar, Paisley, shortly before 4pm on Thursday.
And, last night, 21-year-old Stephen told how he was left badly shaken by his ordeal.
He said: “It was a really frightening experience. The guy came in and brandished a knife and demanded money but I pushed the panic alarm and then told him the police would be here within 30 seconds.
“That seemed to work as he then walked to the front door and put the knife in his pocket before leaving. He was pretty brazen about the whole thing.”
Cops arrived on the scene within minutes of the alarm being activated but, by then, there was no sign of the robber.
Following the incident, officers seized CCTV tapes from the Post Office and have been viewing them in a bid to find clues to the man’s identity.
The suspect is described as white, between 20 and 30 years old and around 5ft 11ins tall.
He was of slim build, spoke with a local accent and was wearing a black hooded jacket, a black or dark scarf around his face and grey jogging bottoms.
Stephen added: “He had a real junkie-look about him and he seemed pretty desperate.”
Postmaster David Lees is urging anyone who has information about the incident to contact the police.
He said: “Stephen is fine and is trying to put a brave face on it.
“I just hope that the police can track this guy down before he does some damage to someone else.”
A police spokesman said they are following “positive lines of enquiry” but are also appealing for anyone with information to get in touch with them.
He added: “We would like to hear from anyone who was in the Lochaline Avenue area at the time of this attempted robbery.
“Perhaps they saw someone acting suspiciously? If so, we would ask that they call Paisley CID on 0141 435 1005 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 .”

"I pushed the panic alarm and then told him the police would be here within 30 seconds." - Indeed, Paisley Police have a reputation for not hanging about.

"Following the incident, officers seized CCTV tapes from the Post Office and have been viewing them in a bid to find clues to the man’s identity." Tapes?!?!? How old is that CCTV system?
They'll have a hard time getting a useful shot of the robber's face from an old fashioned Video Tape. Still. It's just another example of RM "making do" with outdated equipment. Digital CCTV's not as expensive as it used to be RM. Pull your bloody fingers out, and put a decent system in!

They could've just said "CCTV footage" to at least instill some hope that the guy might get caught!

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
