most of the staff at ours take the van home, it saves on YOUR fuel costs, and you ARE covered for going to and from work. whatever you do though, under no circumstaces use it for your own use by running errands, going shopping etc,,,, they will have you for gross misconduct and you WILL be out of a job,

CORRECT..... a driver here was sacked for moving a settee on a sunday morning in an RM van. Went through all the appeals etc but stayed sacked.daveyeff wrote:under no circumstaces use it for your own use by running errands, going shopping etc,,,, they will have you for gross misconduct and you WILL be out of a job,

It's almost impossible to come back from.
More chance of knocking out a line manager and getting away with it.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Re: P&L - Do you take the van home?
Once again FT excellent post
....... The truth of the matter is when RM want something, local management fail to notify the persons doing them favours of their responsibilities and obligations, because they know if they did know no one would help them !!!!!, they want their cake and eat it..... I'm sure it was your good self who posted re. using your own car on delivery and attached that form RM should give to every employee to complete and send to their own insurance company...... Not ONE car user (around half the office) in our D/O has seen such a form or been advised of their responsibility to inform their own insurance company that they are using their car in writing
. Mind contradicting myself now not one of the idiots has stopped using their own transport

So, it's fine to take the van home with the Authorised Retention of Official Royal Mail Vehicles & Powered Equipment Agreement.
It's rightly a sackable offence to then move a sofa in the van of a Bank Holiday weekend.
But what about attending a doctors or hospital appointment in the van during the working day with, or without, permission of your line manager ?

Why on earth would you want to take a van home anyway??! Yes, ok, you maybe insured to and fro and yes, under the agreement yadda yadda.......BUT what if it gets damaged outside your house - who is liable? What if it gets scratched on your drive by your 10 year old putting his scooter away?? What if your wife moves it to get her car out and accidentally scrapes it down the wall?? It's just not worth the hassle. I agree with a previous poster, if RM can't find somewhere to park their own vans then there's no hope.

And if the 10 year old and wife can't take proper control of their scooter and car then there's no hope.
And it's hardly as if anyone would notice another scratch or two on the van.

Re: P&L - Do you take the van home?
There are pros and cons for taking a van home,it's up to each individual to weigh them up and decide for themselves but if i a manager hasn't followed the procedure to the letter...i wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.
That's just asking for trouble.
