He did in the first post - although it was easy to miss.
so he can drive back to the office,
I think the question here is not if the OP is quick, or if the partner is slow but as long as both go at a reasonable pace then the OP has to lump it unfortunately. In fact the OP states he himself goes at a normal pace, as this is not a recognised unit of measure it would be difficult to quantify, but 1 thing is certain a 32 year old will always in the grand scheme of things walk quicker.
They're quicker at everything  With age comes the knowledge that you have to pace yourself to last the course :chuckle Remember your working life is a marathon not a sprint........take it easy, dont rush, you don't get paid any extra.

A very difficult thing this and i'm really surprised that there are not more threads and con traverse on the subject......
This is my take I am totally against runners, short cut takers, people who ignore rules, come in early, use their own transport etc etc. Always do the job properly is my motto..... But I also believe we should all work at a fair and reasonable pace as if we all took 5 hours to do a fair 4 hour duty, sort very slowly on purpose or generally skive we will all end up out of work!!!!! However I believe the addressing of these problems are managements work, not fellow posties, but that is not helping you.
If anyone needs or chooses to finish on time they should not be prevented from doing so, as you are you need to take the issue to the union and tell them you are being forced to do unpaid overtime against your will, which is causing you family problems and don't take no for an answer off them!!!!!. They need to ensure you are allowed to finish on time by your manager, if your partner has problems because of whatever, it is up to the management to either address or ignore them. I wouldn't feel comfortable going to management complaining about my partner, neither would I want to do more than my share (unless someone was ill/ not experienced on the duty or the likes).

Our gaffer wants one PT one FT in the van, can he do this?

I'm not convinced he can.

But then he does what he likes anyway stating he runs the office not the union.

So............lets get this straight.............the postie that wants to get back early to pick up his kids is getting the hump because his partner is taking too long to get the job done properly and drive him back to the office. Sorry fella, got no sympathy for ya. Get a bus

I'd ask to be taken back to the office when my loops are done, and at the closest point to the finish time.

After that it becomes managements problem, not yours.

I don't see what difference it makes as the extra hours between the two will be indoor work.

It makes a mockery of a seniority based repick.

Not necessarily, in our office the repick was taken by the two members of the P&L teams seniority added together to arrive at the aggregate figure and the list was produced on that figure. The teams chose one another beforehand and were aware of the system to be used. Some chose one another on length of service to increase their seniority and some for other reasons. There are always going to be problems when people work in such close proximity over a protracted length of time and it is ongoing. We started P&L in 2009!

If you really despise his lack of effort - once you finished your walk..in fact all of it - just go and spy on him to check what he's doing eg taking a cigarette halfway or something and if such occasions does happen, wack your phone and start recording then show your line manager...easy said and done....i'm the driver and i'm fairly slow as i'm new but i don't mind people spying on me because i do actually walk my ass off!

Personally if he's that worried about his partners effort he should ask for a move better still help the guy out or take on the driving part where the large parcels, tracked and SDs are done. If he only want to work his hours - he should stop bitching and just work his hours. Instead of blaming his partner he should get the manager to make arrangements to return him to finish on time.

I've seen the result of people making waves about having a slow partner, how one or the other is moved and generally the older one with the most seniority which is a travesty of the agreement on seniority.

The idea of the P & L is that it becomes a team effort, you cannot continue to operate in the old single deliverer bubble. There is no way you should be waiting around kicking your heels whilst a 'slower' partner is still delivering. You only make the job longer for yourself in the end as you are both working together from one van and have to meet up at roughly the same time ideally. Make the loops smaller, that will cut down on the disparity between the two, our loops were far too large when set up by management, and they allowed us to reduce the sizes and also make them more even as we both deliver parcels from the trolley. As the driver I was finding it ridiculously heavy some days which meant the loops were hugely mismatched and the deliverer was waiting for ever for me,now we both deliver parcels and mail on smaller loops and go a nice steady speed to meet up within a minute or two of each other or help each other finish loops off.

In summary, my experience is if you keep to the loops that they want you to do on set up they will not work well at all as the larger they are, the more time variation and problems of meeting up occur. You need to both get together and work the thing between you, use your initiative as a team. The quickest way is operating on your own, but we have agreed to work a different way now and there is no going back.

park and loop is only as good as your partner, its based on team work , im the walker in my pairing and have the slightly larger loops and it can take longer there are lots of reasons some one is slower one loop can get two or three times the amount of packets more mail whatever or is actually slower , it takes a little while to get your head around ,we modified the odd part of some of our loops to make it more even left the imbalance on a couple to allow him to do the bigger pkts , but more importantly who ever finishes first we go find our buddy and help finish of the loop it works ,.if your partner is really slow check the timings on the loop if hes within your f""^ed but if hes slower then its a performance issue which in that case should make you go over which would result in cuttin off , which would soon make them look and sort it out.
