THIS is the man police believe may have “vital information” relating to the armed robbery of an Aughton post office.

The CCTV appeal for the witness comes after a masked raider walked into Long Lane Post Office on Holborn Hill clutching what he claimed was a hand grenade at 1.10pm on Wednesday December 28, reported in the Advertiser at the time.

The robber, dressed in dark clothing and with his face covered, shoved customers out of the way while holding what appeared to be a hand grenade.

He approached staff at the service desk and demanded £1,000 in cash.

They initially refused but when he again threatened them with the weapon an assistant handed over the money.

The raider then left in the direction of Colinmander Gardens. No-one was injured in the incident, and it is not clear whether the weapon was real or a replica.

The man in the CCTV image was a customer in the post office after the robbery, and police have so far been unable to trace him. Officers are now appealing for the man, who they believe may be able to help their investigation, to come forward.

Det Con Steve Wilcox from Skelmersdale CID, said: “I would appeal to the man pictured in the CCTV image to come forward and contact police.

“I must stress this man is not a suspect but could have vital information that could assist us with our investigation.

“I’d also renew our appeal for anybody that has any information at all about this robbery, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to contact police”.

Anybody with any information can contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at Crimestoppers-uk.org.
