AS A senior citizen, I can remember a time in the 1950s, 60s and 70s when you could almost set the time of your clocks by the arrival time of the morning post, usually in this area at 7am to 7.30am.
There used to be a second post in the afternoon, but this stopped sometime in the late 50s or early 60s except for properties within, say, one to two miles of the sorting office.
The postman was part of the community, and he was aware when someone was away on holiday, or when someone was ill, he would notice if the milk was still on the doorstep, the curtains had not been opened by a certain time at any particular person's house, and would raise the alarm with the local neighbours.
Now we have a situation where, due to 'management restructuring', we have closed the local sorting offices and the post is delivered from an office 30 to 50 miles away.
You no longer have a regular postman who knows the local people or even the area he is delivering the post to. You could even have a different postman every day of the week.
Over the years, the postal delivery has got later and later in the day. Up to 12 months ago, the post came between 10.30am and 1l.30am, but in the last 12 months it has gone from 11.30am to 2pm.
On Wednesday, January 25, and today, Thursday, January 26, at 3pm in the afternoon, I decided to go for a short walk and called at the local shop on the way back to pick up The Sentinel. I arrived back home at 4pm and, lo and behold, the post had been delivered.
If you strapped a letter to the back of a snail it would arrive quicker than it does at the moment.
Come to think about it, if I used my over-60s bus pass I could deliver a letter locally in the North Staffs or South Cheshire area before dinner time, even though I can't use the bus pass until after 9.30am. I would also save myself the cost of a stamp.

Sadly senior citizens have more than enough spare time on their hands and just end up whingeing about everything.
Stop moaning and use the snail or bus pass instead, that's what I say.

That's a great idea!! These elderly people with nothing better to do, could use their bus passes to go and deliver the mail to the rural areas!
Yet another whingey post from someone with nothing better to do who doesn't understand what goes on in a Delivery Office

However, some were confused as to what "Swings and roundabouts" in the flexibility agreement meant.

Good news though, the CWU are proud to welcome the new militant and direct action members.

You do realise that management sometimes read these threads.TeeferTiger wrote:That's a great idea!! These elderly people with nothing better to do, could use their bus passes to go and deliver the mail to the rural areas!![]()

Re: Post arrives later and later
Well, they'll all soon have something to moan about when TNT take over and they've got to go and collect their mail from the Post Office instead of it being delivered. I honestly can't wait to get to the point/age where I've got nothing else better to moan about than the time the post arrives or how much a stamp costs. Right now, it's waaaaaaaaaaaaay down on my list

Just a thought, but couldn't we persuade these only fogies, whose minds aren't as bright as they once were, that the post isn't late but that it's the next days that we're delivering about eighteen hours early.

Re: Post arrives later and later
The old boy is absolutely right.
The postal service in our country has gone to the dogs.
We prepared mail for delivery earlier, thus delivering mail earlier.
Nowadays, an obscene amount of money is spent by RM management on new technology, that ensures we prepare mail for delivery later, thus delivering the mail later.
If that isn't the absolute definition of Cack-handedness, I don't know what is.
One thing for sure, you would need a hell of a brass neck to call this progress.
