Most bases with a permanent training establishment can have MOD PLOD on gate, Transit and training camp have squaddies on stag, as their Regiment having taken over that camp is responsible for its security, as such they take security fairly seriously as they do not want an incident on their watch, with all the attendant dramas, inquiries and court martials, other Regiments taking pleasure out of their cock ups, search they will regardless.

not quite, not mod plod on gate, usually mpgs, slight difference, u got it the wrong way round, mpgs on transit camps training areas, and regular service personnel on other camps occupied by regular battalions etc
but beside point whether mod plod, mpgs, regs, ta or who ever they have right to search entire contents of any vehicle wishing to enter any establishment

Would not work, the guys doing the guarding/searching would not have to collect the mail. The clerks, who would be ordered to collect it would probably enjoy the trip away from the office.Lounge Lizard wrote:MOD Plods would rarely disturb theirzx135 wrote:NWpostie wrote:Most bases with a permanent training establishment can have MOD PLOD on gate, Transit and training camp have squaddies on stag, as their Regiment having taken over that camp is responsible for its security, as such they take security fairly seriously as they do not want an incident on their watch, with all the attendant dramas, inquiries and court martials, other Regiments taking pleasure out of their cock ups, search they will regardless.

If you're on a tight schedule though surely best to decline, turn round and advise them to collect all their mail from the Delivery Office - the threat of that extra work will surely make them see sense and you'll just get waved straight through, maybe even with a smile, in future.
Any service personnel just waving any vehicle through with a smile, will have a very short career, probably concluding at Colchester.

Maybe they've tightened up a bit now but I knew someone who got waved through holding up a piece of toast the size of his identity card inside his car, the guard keeping his usual distance and just pushing the button to raise the barrier.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:Would not work, the guys doing the guarding/searching would not have to collect the mail. That depends on the current local security state levels etc. If you have a single man operating a barrier, then its likely to be very low and only a certain amount of checks are needed not a 100% check on every vehicle. Also in the lowest levels "recognition" of the individual by the guard is allowed. If however, there are armed guards and the Alert status is Red or Amber (unless its changed since I left) then that guard should have been done, its idiots like him, or lapses in security that got squaddies killed or injured in incidents such as Royal Marine School of Music in Deal, or Beilefield or Rheindaheln or Ternhill in Shropshire

Re: Do the military have authority to search a RM vehicle?
Firstly i served over six years in Northern Ireland which i could say i've searched thousands off personell and vehicles. We adhered too, what we carried which was cards[orders] other words the bible law which had various colours:white, yellow, blue etc....i can confirm that No sensative mail was too be opened was one of the orders.zx135 wrote:andy prentice wrote:MOD soldiers can search outer and inner of any vehicle, however cannot OPEN mail,as once a soldier did just that, and low behold was sued in court as seeminly the mail contained sensative medical records.
sorry thats bollocks, armed force personnel are allowed to inspect the enitre vehicle and its entire contents if they so wish, but again only if the postie is intending to take the vehicle onto the premises, he can refuse and they wont search but they wont let him on site,
no soldier has ever been sued for searching a vehicle and inspecting its contents for explosives
As for the mod have never been sued, then you are never so much wrong.Lets just say a few million pounds wrong.Fact;most of Sinn Fein funds came, would you believe from the mod.Such as assault, damage too property, example one of our guys in our platoon had a situation.A well known terriost was stopped at our checkpoint and refused too come out of his car and locked himself in.
So mr x from our platoon screamed at him him too open his door and get out. With no response, therefore smashed his side window and dragged him out.Of course in of our cards stated if that situation ever occur then we had too hold a big piece of card against the window too say that that too gain entry will have too use reasonable force by gaining access through the windows.
After that, the driver[terriost] got Sinn Fein involved and threw the book at the mod .The outcome was the victim by that time wrapped himself up like a mummy afer the ordeal was awarded a tidy six figure sum.Now that is one incident. Also reaqd in a book[author ex special forces] states that the Brittish mod were losing in a tune of tens millions of pound per year through court and mostly out of court settlements. For those interested the book is called one hand on rifle and other tied behind our back.Which says it all really.

Re: Do the military have authority to search a RM vehicle?
sorry still not proved the point, no serving personell has ever been sued by anyone for being searched whilst gaining access to any establishment, as for not being able to search the entire contents of a vehicle im not going to comment on that for opsec nut i still stand by what i say, if someone wants access to any mod property then the entire contents of their person and vehicle are subject to searchandy prentice wrote:Firstly i served over six years in Northern Ireland which i could say i've searched thousands off personell and vehicles.

You are right and what your saying tough as it is the right too search all vehicles.I even done it too my commandind officer once, just too piss him off
but as for mail don't open it or packets, in fact we always had a barrack duty postman [army] who would meet the royal mail at the gate and he would take the responsibility from there

Screaming and smashing the window is surely so unjustified and unprofessional that it's no surprise that the MOD was seriously out of pocket after such an incident.andy prentice wrote:Firstly i served over six years in Northern Ireland which i could say i've searched thousands off personell and vehicles.

It's well known now tht the City of London and Brighton bombings brought the tory government into secret talks with the IRA that lead to the peace process and ultimately what is seen to be the end of the troubles in Northern Ireland, the relative stability there now being welcomed by all right minded people.

I should say raise your voice instead off screaming. Also yes.you can break the side window too gain access,as long as you put that poxy card on the windscrean,so the driver can see it,as reason is,he may be deaf. Also states on the order cards that army personel can carry out the action.

'Poxy card' isn't the sort of language one might expect of one holding a job that surely demands a great deal of tact.andy prentice wrote:I should say raise your voice instead off screaming. Also yes.you can break the side window too gain access,as long as you put that poxy card on the windscrean,so the driver can see it,as reason is,he may be deaf. Also states on the order cards that army personel can carry out the action.
And surely extra care should have been taken by all service personnel not to offend after the actions of the army in the Bogside area of Londonderry on 30 January 1972.
