A MUCH-LOVED post woman who has been serving a village for 19 years has bid a sad farewell to the community.

Christine Hupalo has been delivering parcels and letters to the people of Norwood Green and has made many friends in the village over nearly two decades.

Residents were so keen to see her stay that they started a petition for her to keep her route.

However, the changes had already been put in place by the royal mail service, but that didn’t stop the community showing their appreciation with gifts and a presentation at the village hall.

Christine said: “I am going to miss all the residents as they are not customers, they have become my friends and I have got to know everyone in the area.

“It was very nice that they tried to keep me here as I have seen the village change over time. I have seen children grow up from being in school to them working in full-time jobs.

“I have loved my time here and being part of the village.”

She has become a prominent figure and important part of the village with each day being different and on one occasion she called the police for a suspected burglary.

Another time she came to the rescue with first aid and a call for an ambulance when she found a man who had taken a bad fall in the kitchen and had struggled to get the door open.

Resident Beattie Horsfall said: “We have lots of fond memories of Christine.

“She has been like our neighbourhood watch and supported the village in everything what we have done.

“Everyone wishes her all the best for the future.”

Christine was also short listed for an unsung heroes award in 2009.

She was one of 12 postal workers from Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire who was nominated by the public.

With 20 years service with Royal Mail, she is now working on her new route in Sowerby Bridge.
