PEOPLE who change their address should let the Royal Mail know their new details or risk losing valuable post which could contain sensitive personal information.
Adrian Knapper, a former postman and now director at Whitegates Estate Agents in Hanley, says a Royal Mail study has shown that with the growth in the rental market someone under 35 will have, on average, lived in five different houses and around half forget to redirect their mail when they move.
Letters containing personal information which never reach their intended recipient are a major contributor to the £2.7 billion of identity fraud that occurs each year.
Adrian says: "The Royal Mail's own redirection service may seem an unnecessary expense to perpetuate the receipt of what is likely to amount to some junk mail.
"It costs between £8 for a month and £41 a year, but letters with credit card offers or financial services could prove more costly if they fell into the wrong hands. "Services like iammoving.com can also minimise the risk of mail going to an old address."

Re: Redirect mail or risk identity fraud
For over the three decades that I worked as a Letter Carrier here, it was expected that if the carrier knew that someone had moved they would return the mail with an explanation ( moved, deceased, unknown, etc ). Well a couple of yr's ago someone made a new rule that we were to stop doing this and just deliver everything as addressed unless an ACTIVE COA (change of address) was in effect. This mean't that the day after the COA expired we were to become very ignorant and deliver known moves to the old address. When confronted by this, the options available was do it or risk being fired. They even sent someone on a cross country tour to explain that this is what the customer's wanted.... Of course this individual had all of 13 months experience with Canada Post... and as soon as she stated that we all laughed and asked for a phone number (her's) that when our customers started to yell at us and call us stupid she could the explain to them directly. It was also brought up that if our Corporate Policy now was to facilitate IDENTITY THEFT that it should be publicly in the news. They just do not want to listen and it seems want to destroy a good safe public service.
